credit report when living in uk under 3 yrs
« on: June 20, 2016, 11:28:25 AM »
I would like to check my UK credit score (I got turned down for a car insurance quote as "high risk" and have no idea why) but the websites I've found need three years of residency and we've only been here for two. Has anyone been in this situation before?

I've just experienced a similar situation today being denied a credit card...been in the UK for two years as well.

One of the things I've read that creates an issue for passing credit checks is not being on the electoral register....I'm not currently aware of any ways to get around this so sorry I can't offer much practical help....All I could think of is if you have someone in the UK family/partner etc. who could also put their name to the insurance or just keep trying around different companies to see if anyone is willing to offer you the policy.

But I would like to know if anybody has some insight or solutions to this besides waiting!

Good luck.

You can contact each of the credit agencies and add a notation to your file stating something like "not on the electoral register due to not being a citizen", etc.

I don't know if it really helps, but can't do any harm and doesn't take much effort.

This is going back a bit, 1996, but I got a secured credit card with HSBC. I showed them my passport with the stamp that indicated I was in the UK as a spouse, my marriage certificate and my lease agreement with my name as a resident and a £500 deposit. I had only been in the country six months (I originally arrived on a fiancée visa). Once the year passed, it became "unsecured" with a credit line of £1500 and my deposit was returned. Perhaps you can try that? It may be different now but it's worth a try.

I did have a bit of trouble getting a dumb catalog because I wasn't on the electoral roll but I ended up sending a copy of my passport visa entry stamp as a spouse and my lease agreement with my name. It was ridiculously time consuming for a blinking Next catalog but I didn't have much trouble after that. Again, go visit the banks and find out what you can do to get credit.

I've just noticed I have had that HSBC credit card 20 years.
