Streamlined certificate statement
« on: July 27, 2016, 11:54:29 AM »
I am nearly ready to submit my tax returns for the streamlined process.

I need to provide a statement for Form 14653 - the Certification by US person Residing Outside of the United States.

My personal situation is that I am a dual citizen of UK/US. I was born in the UK and have lived and worked here since birth. I only became aware of the need to file US tax returns earlier this year.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience of filling this form in and how much detail is actually required in the statement? Is there a risk of getting it wrong and not being accepted in the streamlined program?

If you scroll down a bit, there is some useful discussion here on wilfulness:

In completing Form 14653, you would have to look at the FAQs updated (again) by the IRS earlier this month as well.

On reflection, it is bit shocking though - chaky - that although you have engaged a professional to prepare the tax returns, you are having to ask questions about the process on a web forum. Cannot your accountant assist, or is the foreign streamlined & PFICs something new to them?

My accountant has many years of experience with a reputable firm dealing solely with expat tax returns. I have been pleased with what they've done for me so far.

I got an email from them this morning asking me to start preparing my statement for the certificate. I haven't followed it up with them yet and I don't know if they will advise me on exactly what to write because I haven't discussed it at this point.

My question was purely about how long it should be or how much detail is absolutely necessary. I posted on this forum as I assumed there would have been several others who would have done a streamlined filing so might know about what is acceptable.
