Renewing 30 day vignettes
« on: August 02, 2016, 05:03:32 PM »
We are planning a settlement application for my husband and trying to figure out the timing of the submission. One of our questions is what is the procedure for renewing a 30 day vignette? Because the processing time for the application in Sheffield is unpredictable (we gather roughly 30 days for priority from this site) the vignette may be issued at a moment we can't actually complete the entry process. I found some info on the gov.uk site but cannot find the detail of how the transfer of conditions is actually done:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/transferring-a-visa-to-a-new-passport-ecb17/transferring-a-visa-ecb17#ecb173-replacing-a-30-day-short-validity-travel-vignette

Any further guidance would be very welcome!

Yes, that's the correct link.

You really want to try to get the timing right the first time.  If you have to send for a new vignette, you have to resend the passport back to Sheffield, wait for it to be processed, and wait for it be to returned.  And it costs $253 without shipping.

Basically, you'll still have little control over when the vignette is reissued.

You can apply for travel up to 90 days before you want to travel (so an application today could be dated for traveling in November).  Would that be a better option?

I've only heard of 1 or 2 people having to transfer their vignette because usually you will be able to travel in your 30-day window, since you decide what date you want the visa to start.

When you apply, you should put your intended travel date to be a date you know you will be able to travel. It can be up to 3 months ahead and your visa will be made valid for 30 days from that date.

The only time your visa will be valid from a different date is if your intended travel date has already passed before the visa is issued.

In that case it will be made valid from the date is is approved and you will have 30 days from that date.

So, say you apply now and you put your travel date as 15th Sept. As long as your visa has been issued by then, it should be valid for travel from 15th Sept to 15th Oct.

It will only be different if it is issued after 15th Sept (so maybe it will be 22nd Sept to 22nd Oct instead, for example)

In terms of getting a new vignette, as far as I know, you just have to fill out the online form for a new vignette, pay the fee and then mail your passport back to UKVI for them to issue a new sticker.

Thank you both for your helpful replies - as always it's great to have the support from those who have been through this!

Can you direct me to the place in the application where we insert our intended travel date? Somehow we haven't spotted this yet.

I'm not sure exactly as I'm not applying so I can't see the application.

The paper version of the form just has it at the very top before you start the form (above section 1):

Date you intend to travel to the UK: DD MM YYYY

Thank you - sometimes things are hiding in plain sight!
