Notary

I need to have some documents notarized. I've found the notary society. And need to make an appointment.  But was wondering if there was anywhere I could walk in like the bank?

Thanks

Assuming you are in the USA then there are Notaries all over the place.  Our local UPS store always has a Notary on hand, but I've also used Notaries in grocery stores and shopping malls.  Try googling "Notaries in your town".

I think Leanna is in the UK.

I've not found any place where you can just walk in. I had to make an appointment, and was told there is only one notary per certain area, but not sure if that is correct. Did you ask how much it will cost? They aren't cheap like they are in the USA. :( (I believe one has to be a solicitor to be a notary in the UK, hence the much higher cost.)

Okay.

Definitely not as easy. I just Googled Notaries for the town I live in England and as you say, notaries appear to need for you to make an appointment.

UK notaries are in short supply. They are usually solicitors or lawyers and there are only 600 in the UK and they charge quite a lot for their services. In my experience you can expect to pay £60 or thereabouts per document, we paid over £400 to get our home sale closing documents notarised a couple of years ago.

I recently had to have some documents either certified or notarized in order to open a savings account.  Certain Royal Mail post offices provide a document certification service if that will suffice instead of a notary.  It's easy to find out which ones offer the service by going on line.

We went to the US consulate in Edinburgh. I guess the Embassy in London or any other Consulate also does it. Can't remember the cost but it wasn't much. Used it as an excuse for a long weekend break in Edinburgh.

I thought this too but found out they only do certain documents...ID (passport, driver's license), utility bills and something else. Anything more complicated they don't do :-/

Ah, I didn't know that but it makes sense now that I think about it.  All I needed was to verify that a copy of my license was a true copy of the real thing, which is different than having someone verify that your signature is a true one - which I think is what notaries do.

Personally, I've always been a bit dubious about the whole notarizing thing when you can get it done just about anywhere in the US.  Unfortunately now they all seem to be jumping on the medallion signature guarantee, which evidently isn't available anywhere..... well anywhere I happened to be anyway.  ::)

It's because a notary is a completely different thing in the UK, something that those authorities in the US who require notarisation done in the UK just don't understand. Its not a case of "jumping on the medallion bandwagon", there just isn't a mechanism for "anyone can be a notary public".

As much as I complain about paying for the medallion I do understand that its a different system.

I've found someone close by. But she's not certified by the US Embassy. So I don't think she can do it, and yes it is expensive. £90! She says I may have to go to London to have it done if my loan officer says she can't do it 😕
