Marriage License Registered / Visa Process???
« on: November 19, 2004, 04:23:53 PM »
Okey dokey... so I've got a new question for all of you wonderful folks.
After we get married and have our license... does it then have to go to the state for registration purposes before I can apply for my visa?  (I live in Texas, moving to UK)

I was trying to work out a timeline for the wedding/moving/etc and thought that we'd probably have to wait 2+ weeks for the license to come back to us, then I'd be able to apply for my visa... or does it really have to be like that?  can I apply for the visa right away, wait for them to send me the paperwork back and THEN send it to the state for registry?

Or am I completely mad and have got this all wrong? ;) ???

Much thanks!

you need to have your certified marriage liscence when you apply for your visa.

we got married on a saturday, the certified copy was at our house while we were on our honeymoon on the following wednesday (after going from church to town hall).  i then took it to the NYC consulate the following week (was on honeymoon still), got my visa that day and flew to the UK.

does that help?  i may not have understood your quesion

It really depends on how fast your county can turn things around.  We were married on a Saturday and were able to pick up our marriage certificate on Tuesday morning (the pastor took it to the registrar of deeds on Monday).  We then went to the consulate on Thursday.  Believe me, I called a million times to make sure that they would have it ready before Wednesday!   :D

If the wait is two weeks....well, you'll have to wait the two weeks.  The consulate won't accept a marriage license as proof that you're married.  It'll need to be certified (i.e., have a raised seal and an official signature by a county official).

Thanks for the quick response!

I got an actual person on the line at the Department of Vital Statistics who was very helpful.
She said that we can go in person on Monday morning (we're getting married on Saturday) and walk away that day with a certified copy! :D

HOORAY!  No two week wait!

Next question -- anyone know how long it takes for the visa process via mail? I don't know if I'll be able to afford to fly up to NYC consulate.

(getting excited -- less than 4 months until the wedding!!!)

From what people have written on here, I'd say it takes about 2-4 weeks for a postal application.

Woo... I found an answer on the web!

Using the fast-track system they say it takes approximately 10 working days!  Thats good news!

(getting excited!)
