Applesauce
« on: November 24, 2004, 07:58:51 PM »
Im sure this has been covered before but does anyone know where I can get American applesauce such as Mott's without ordering online? Skyco and the others are so expensive! My 2 year old is getting over being sick and Im using the B.R.A.T. diet to get him back into the swing of things. I had a jar of Mott's stashed away for a special occasion (how pathetic am I?) but I opened it for him tonight. I wanna have a back up jar now. I cant believe there wouldnt be a store that has it. Anyone know?

Never seen Motts in regular stores, though hubby has brought some home from Partridges in London.  Sainsburys has an own brand Bramley applesauce which I use for baby.  It's a bit chunkier, but does the trick for us.

Have you any time to make some?

3 to 4 lbs of peeled, cored, and quartered apples.  (granny smith, or fuji apples.)
4 strips of lemon peel - use a vegetable peeler to strip 4 lengths
Juice of one lemon
3 inches of cinnamon stick
1/4 cup of dark brown sugar
up to 1/2 cup of white sugar
1 cup of water
1/4 teaspoon of salt

Put all ingredients into a large pot. Cover. Bring to boil. Lower heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes and remove from heat. Remove cinnamon sticks and lemon peels. Mash with potato masher. Ready to serve, either hot or refrigerated. Delicious with vanilla ice cream.

Pebbles,

there's a shop on the city centre ring road called Alma's Delicatessen. It's on the opposite side from the Belgrade Theatre and sort of half way between the Belgrade and the bus station. I just bought a bottle of applesauce, which they'd imported from Germany for 1.50. Try them!

Making your own is the route I would go.  There are a million ways to do it, but as I do not use sugar in mine, I find a quicky-method easiest:

Peel and chop an apple, add a touch of water, cover and cook on stove, stirring and mashing on occasion.  Add sugar and cinnamon/nutmeg if you wish, cool then chow down.  This is the same method I use when canning, only I use more than 1 apple and I put it in jars...

I would imagine you could just add cinnamon to any recipe.

I used to make my own applesauce back in the States.  It's lovely!  Especially since the recipe I use has cloves...it's such a Christmas smell!

One thing if you make your own - it won't be "white" like canned/jar stuff.  They bleach out the natural brown colour of most store applesauce.  I have tried to make it with lemon juice to get the "white" effect and it doesn't work very well.

I love it brown anyway, but this bothers some people.

I just make it.  I peel, core and cut up about 6 apples, put them in a pot with a bit of apple juice (or for not-little kids Strongbow cider), and a bit of sugar, let the apples cook down, buzz with a hand blender,  add sugar to taste and cinnamon if desired (to taste).

It takes less than 1/2 an hour.

I just use whatever apples we have on hand.

It doesn't last very long in the fridge but then again, my kids love applesauce so they eat it all right away.

I just use any apple, which is usually what Sainsbury's has on sale.  Some are sweeter than others in which case adjust the sugar accordingly.

Thanks. I was just wondering if there was one that was better to use.

Frances' recipe is bang on if you use Macintosh apples and you want the Mott's taste. I do it every week and it's fantastic.
