Moving company recommendations?
« on: April 18, 2017, 10:07:27 PM »
Hello. I'm moving from Pullman Washington to Brighton this June.
Anyone who has recommendations on ship freight company? There are so many companies and all have real good and real bad reviews at the same time. I have relatively small volumes of stuff to move including two iMacs.

Anyone heard of Blue Horizon? or any other recommendations?

Thanks a lot.

How small is small? If it's very small, you would likely be better off paying to bring extra suitcases as checked luggage.

Yes, extra baggage is the way to go if you don't have much. You can bring boxes too, not just suitcases, check with your airline.

I've not used them but heard good things about UPakweShip.

I used sendmybag to get my things here from the US.  It was really nice: arranged a pickup time at my parents' house, and then it arrived at my door here in the UK 2 days later.  It was an enormous bag full of clothes and books and I think it cost something like £50 or £60.  They have pretty clear instructions on what you can and cannot pack, and how to pack it.  They use DHL, and estimated that it would take 4 days when it only took 2.

Holy crap thank you so much for this! We were thinking about UPakWeShip and it was $1100 for 50 cubic feet. I certainly didn't need that much. But this is a much better option and way cheaper! $169 for up to 66 lbs. Way cool! :D

Of course!  It was recommended to me by someone else on the forum, and it really did work for us.

I know there are limits to what they move but they have a very good website/live chat to help you figure it out.

This forum has been so useful for so many things! I was really dreading having to lug two massive suitcases and a carry on through the airport!

From what I've read on their site it just seems like no liquids/gels/aerosols/batteries. I'll look into it more in depth but I'm mostly looking to put clothes and shoes in it.

That's a great deal and not much more than you would pay for an extra checked suitcase. :D

Don't forget to fill out your transfer of residence form so you won't have to pay import duty on your stuff. I'm sure someone else will have the link and instructions. :D

I cannot recommend UPak, and definitely second the "second bag" or other option.

What was wrong with UPak? We are planning on using them as I have a good-sized heirloom desk (53 inches wide, which cancels out most other options)

They may work well for you, but they were a disaster for us. Very long story. We chose to use them initially as I'd seen several favorable comments about them on this and other expat boards. As our lawyer is discussing it with them I shouldn't really be saying much publically at present. We ended up going with a consolidator, which was cheaper than UPak anyway, at the very last moment. Of course, that means we are kind of camping for the next several months until our crates get here, but at least they'll get here.
