Job Offer to Start Date Timeline?
« on: May 22, 2017, 12:25:10 PM »
Hello!

After applying everywhere I was qualified for over 3 months I've got a job offer, and I'm really excited!  Got the offer last Wednesday, and gave them permission to contact my references.  I'm not worried about my references, as they told me before applying they were very happy to be my references, and I also gave them a heads up when I got the phone call with the offer.

I was just wondering how long it takes in your experience from accepting a job offer to actually training?  I told them I could start anytime but am moving house this upcoming bank holiday weekend so I don't know if they'll have me start before or after that.  (It's a job in the entertainment field so there are some events on weekends.)  I'm fine either way, just happy to have an offer, but would like to hear about your experiences.

Hmm, I've always had a start date agreed when I accepted the contract.  But I've always had a notice period to work.  Have you asked for a start date?

I hate to say this, but it's possible that it could be waaaaay long er than you expect.  It's happened like that with me.  Who knows for sure though ?

The job start date on the listing was 'immediately' as the outgoing person has been gone for a while.  I think that they had interviewed internally but then decided to go external so it took a while.  My new manager told me she would be in touch via email to confirm when referencing and paperwork has finished, as that all has to be done before I'm trained.

I have no notice date as I've been unemployed and with our move coming up (within the same city) it's not like I'm just twiddling my thumbs, so I am okay if it takes a while.  It's good to know that sometimes it takes a while!

I'd call in Thursday if you haven't heard anything.  But yes, things can take a Looooong time here.  Very normal.

And congratulations!   :)

Thank you both!

And I'll keep Thursday in mind, at least for a status update.  I worked there part time in a lower position when I was a student, and I was just looking through past emails and realizing that it did take a while for that job.  We were hired in bulk for the panto season then but maybe it doesn't matter.  Also I remember training and then it was a week or two between training and my first shift last time.

I interviewed in mid-December and didn't start until the second week of February.  Granted, Christmas came between but it was still a very long process.  I do work for the council which outsources their recruitment and the company is... yeah... not the best at communication, we'll just say.  Similar timeline for the person we just took on beginning of this year.  It depends on the company and how quickly they can get things sorted, but it may take a couple of months.
