Airline tickets - buy now or after Christmas?

Traveling sometime between Feb and Apr. Thinking post Christmas sales might be a good time to buy - or is it better to buy now?

For what it's worth - I booked a very cheap ticket at one week's notice late in January 2004 from Gatwick to Denver via MSP.   I guess you're taking a bit of a gamble waiting for the new year, but there's usualy plenty of spare capacity and some bargains to be had.   Anyone else got any thoughts?

It's been a few years now, but I picked up a dirt cheap flight from BWI to LHR on Virgin.  They were running a special promo, so like you said it is a bit of a gamble as to what they have on offer.
