Winter Weather Forecast
« on: November 08, 2017, 07:32:37 PM »
Ksand, I’m looking at you...

Husband read that it’s going to be the coldest winter.  Before my eyes rolled so far back in my head that they got stuck, he said that the same weather pattern that was present in 2010 that caused all the snow is in force this year.  Guessing this is a El Niño type thing.

Can you confirm if this winter we have the same “insert technical name” condition as was present in 2010?

And I know I’m being cheeky, as you are living it up in Gibraltar!

Thanks!  You’re the best!

Yeah, sorry, I haven't even looked at the weather in the UK for this winter.

Right now, I'm dealing with daytime highs of 20 degrees and 'cold' overnight temperatures of 12 degrees. This morning, my boss stated that 'winter is here', because until just 4 days ago we were having overnight minimums of 19 degrees and now they're only between 10 and 13 degrees :P.

I was still in N Yorkshire in 2010-11.....we had snow. It was NICE (in my humble opinion). Now.....was it devastating? Nope. Did people get cold? Yep. Was it WINTER? Yep. This "fear" of winter I just don't understand. It has been happening for more than a few years.....or hundreds.....or thousands....It gets colder during the winter. Warmer during the summer. I'm not out sitting in a lean-to (there are people who are doing this.....sometimes having to....not sure what to do about that)....get over it. Dress warmer..... NOW, WHEN IT INTERFERES WITH GOLF I have an issue. But, I'll suck it up and deal with it.....it's weather.....it happens.

Lol!  Love it.

I have one concern....  do I buy a sled for the kid?  Don’t want to spend money on something that will never be used.   ;)

I know it screwed up air travel at Christmas in 2010, which would be a bummer as my parents are coming.  And we had to cut our trip to them short because of Irma.

But I moved here from Colorado.  I’d love some snow.  But would prefer powder to slush!

I was doing my year abroad in Leeds that year (2010) and it totally messed up all of my travel plans! I got stranded in Austria for days at the beginning of December (on what was supposed to be a quick weekend trip) and then I got stranded in London when trying to go home for Christmas for a few days. Luckily, I just stayed with my then-boyfriend (now-husband) at his place but fellow students I knew had to sleep at Heathrow for a couple of days!

tl;dr there was snow in both Leeds and London that year, but it was not what I think of as 'real' snow being from upstate New York where it snows feet at a time. It was a couple of inches at best.

I was doing my meteorology training between Oct 2010 and March 2011... it was an awkward weather system because we had a blocking high, which lasted for days, so we got the same cold, snowy conditions day after day.

We'd actually done some of our exams the week before Christmas and we due to go into work on the Friday morning to find out our results... we knew snow was on the way though, so our trainers (who lived in small villages) told us they would see what the weather was like in the morning before coming in... in the end, they decided it wasn't worth it getting stranded later and sent us our results by text :P.

I managed to drive back to my parents' house for the holidays just before it started snowing properly, but my colleague from Belgium almost didn't get home due to flights being cancelled.

Despite what the papers say, I think it's too early at the moment to make any firm predictions regarding the winter this year.

Anything more than about 5 days ahead is too far ahead to predict with any great certainty.

I shall continue to roll my eyes dramatically when he announces it’s going to be the coldest winter on record and the hottest summer on record.   ;D

Lol - the papers churn out the same alarmist stories every year and they never come true. All they do is take the seasonal probability forecasts that we issue and twist what they say to make it sound scary.

For example, if the seasonal forecast comes up with a 60% chance of below normal temperatures for Nov/Dec/Jan and a 40% chance of above normal temperatures for Nov/Dec/Jan, the papers will be printing headlines like: "Coldest winter on record predicted" and "100 days of snow"

I'm already cold (and I can feel my body getting colder as I think about it......)

Honestly, I may need to buy more flannel shirts/jumpers to be safe.....Do I buy a snow shovel??? Will I need it??

Coming from New England as made me loathe snow (everybody here seems to beg the heavens for it LOL). I still can't shake the feeling that it will snow and I will need to crawl out of bed into the cold and shovel out just to get to work (when in reality they would probably close the office due to a light dusting). If I knew 100% I didn't have to leave my house, I would be TOTALLY up for any and all snowfall....But I remember digging myself out of like 3 or 4 feet of snow before I left so that I could get to work DURING A SNOW EMERGENCY WHERE ROADS SHOULD HAVE BEEN SHUT TO NONESSENTIAL PERSONNEL! (they eventually called to say "don't come in" juuuuuuussssttt before I left, thankfully). I am cold at the best of times so that mixed with the fact that we need a new boiler for sure as ours is dodgey does not fill me with happiness at this weather prospect....and I'm down south so know I don't have it as bad as some! hahah (end rant)

I've got SO many beanies and a nice warm scarf that was a present last Christmas. They definitely help, but I am a grumpy MF-er when it starts getting cold as I literally HATE leaving my house and going out into the cold hahah Apologising in advance for any grumpiness directed at the snow.

I'm already freezing!  And we have to drive up to Scotland today, and stay a couple of nights, for a family funeral (not a close relative).  I wonder if I could have my body lagged like an old boiler before we go?
