Using Transferwise
« on: January 03, 2018, 08:39:53 PM »
Is it just me, or does receiving a transfer you sent to yourself earlier in the day feel like a little gift?  Like, "Yay, money!"  I mean, sure, it was my money to begin with, but now it is here, in the currency I use 98% of the time... readily accessible in my checking account.  Bonus!

I might also have sent myself a gift of tequila from Amazon, to arrive Friday.  (The money transfer and the tequila order were not related actions, but my reactions to them will feel similar.)

</weird>

8/1/2016 - FLR(M)#2 by post -- approved!
8/5/2018 - ILR in person -- approved!

lol I love transferwise. I just gifted myself some dollars to keep up with my student loans back home.

Then I shamelessly went to town on Amazon as well. I mean, of course I need funfetti cake mix for five pounds a box

I think the only remaining question is why hasn't this happened yet?!  I'm going to make an edible sparkly funfetti cake when I finally have a kitchen.  And my husband is just going to have to accept it.  *grin*

Hehe I’m about to tackle a Pokemon cake for our daughter’s birthday, she’s a tom boy. I wonder how mad she’d be if I added sparkles

heheh  I don't know, but I'd love to see it! (The cake, not her anger, I mean!)  Are you doing a specific Pokemon, or a take on the theme of Pokemon.  There is 'stardust' in Pokemon Go ...  just so you know.  ;)

Unless you are moving very large amounts at once (over $100k), Transferwise is generally considered the cheapest and easiest method.  There's a short thread where other services are discussed here: http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=92349.0 , but I think the conclusion was to use Transferwise.

It is certainly one of the best if not the best. I use it often as I have US pensions to move each month and even have their app on my phone, it really is very easy to use and has great rates.

When we bought our house last year and needed to move a couple of sums over $100k then I used my bank. (I have an HSBC account in the US and UK but Transferwise is still cheaper on sums below $100k)

It's great.  If transfering a big sum of money and you are nervous.  You can set it up and do a small amount first and then do the big lump.  :)
