Tyoe 1 diabetes -- how does UK care compare to US?
« on: February 19, 2018, 10:55:37 AM »
I am curious to hear from people with diabetes who have experienced the care/support of both the US and UK healthcare system.

How do you compare the two? What are the pros and cons of each? I am especially curious to understand the US setup a little more -- how much did you have to pay over there, and what was the standard like?

I did a write up on the NHS and Diabetes care in this thread: http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=90257.msg1168544#msg1168544

In the US, it seems to be like anything, "How good is your health insurance"?
The cost of insulin is going up and up.  And deductibles are getting sky high, with many people having to pay tons of money for co-pays for Diabetes supplies, appointments, etc.

Some technology is behind in the US (not FDA approved), but the NHS often doesn't pay for these things anyways.  There are a lot of groups out there that show CGM in the Cloud and Loop (artificial DIY pancreas), if you have cash to pump out on these things.

Disclaimer that I don't have Diabetes myself (since you were asking for personal experience), but I am a current Children With Diabetes Friends for Life Staff Member, and a former Diabetes UK volunteer.

The Daughter worked in medical offices on-and-off over a decade. Says the first thing they do is biopsy your wallet.  :-\\\\

Then they discuss 1) if they'll accept you as a patient and 2) what treatment is covered by your insurance (note that this is not "what treatment would be best for you").
