US/UK taxes-first time through
« on: February 22, 2018, 06:20:42 PM »
Hi Friends!

Hope you all are well :)

Wonder if someone could point me in the direction of a good resource for how on earth to file taxes this year? My husband started his job in the UK in July 2017 and I started mine in November 2017. Our US income last year was negligible because we were finishing up grad degrees, and I didn't work while awaiting my visa.

Two major questions:
1. Do I have to officially file in the UK? All my UKC friends are saying they don't do it like we do in the US, but is there some exception for residents that I need to know about?

2. Is your typical TaxAct, H&R Block, etc. online software up to the task of overseas filings for the US? I really would rather not deal with an accountant unless I must!

Thanks, all!! ;D

You do not need to file a UK self-assessment unless either-
you get a notice from HMRC to file a return, or
you owe some tax to HMRC.
In practical terms, the PAYE system should deduct the right amount of tax. Look carefully at the Notices of Coding that you will receive for your employment income and check that they are appropriate.
