How much??
« on: April 14, 2018, 02:38:09 PM »
Much as I love my tuxedo cat he's going to cost me between $2500 and $3500 to ship by air if the quotes I've received are to be believed. Anyone got any tips about decent quality lower priced shippers or cost cutting beyond the obvious. He is fully vaccinated and chipped and has his fully compliant kitty transporter ready to go.

Awww! Worth every penny!  ;D

But seriously, that sounds about right for using a pet transportation company but you could save a lot doing it yourself and dealing with the airline directly.

Another potentially cheaper but not easier option is to bring him via France where he'll travel for a couple of hundred dollars but then you have to figure out how to get him back to the UK.

Thanks, pretty much what I suspected, France would be easy enough. I guess my wife wouldn't mind a day in
Paris on the Eurostar.

That's one of the problems, you can't take cats on Eurostar.

Haha, sorry!  :) I haven't done that route but I think you can do it by taking a car on the ferry.

There are pet transporters who will take your pet back for you but they charge a lot so if you are going this way for reasons of economy, that kind of defeats the purpose!

If your wife has a car, she can drive to France to pick you up. She can either do a ferry (check the specific rules for each ferry and pets on them) or you can do the Eurotunnel. The Eurotunnel website has all the information that you need for pet transportation and it's a fairly affordable option.

Whereabouts would the cat fly out of? If LAX, SFO or JFK then I'd recommend Virgin. See my comments here on reply #3

They charged us $1500 and our Tuxedo is bigger than yours.

Call Virgin atlantic directly. I just got quoted $2500 for 3 pets.

https://www.virginatlantic.com/us/en/travel-information/special-flight-requirements/flying-with-pets.html

The US: Atlanta, Boston, JFK, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, Orlando, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington DC.   Virgin Cargo US bookings
Tel: +1 800 828 6822 ext. 4 (it was 3 when I called)
Monday - Friday: 10am - 6pm (UK Time)   We do not accept pets travelling to the USA over the weekend. We do not accept pets leaving Orlando and Miami from 1 June through to and including 30 September.

http://www.jamescargo.com/pets/ I also got a quote here. They sent me to Airpets America, which gave me an estimate of $3500 for 3 pets.
