A new Find
« on: December 10, 2004, 08:08:39 AM »
Hi All:

The ever elusive food sleuth that I am found something new at Lidl the other night.  It is a product called poultry kabanossi and it is exactly like the smoked sausage back home.  Think Eckrich or Hillshire farms labels.  They have two products actually, the first is the poultry kabanossi which is 40% turkey and 40%pork, as well as nitrites and nitrates.  The other is just pork kabanossi, which I haven't tried as I try to limit my intake of bad fats!  The poultry kabanossi was nothing short of awesome and at a price of £1.29/300 grams, not too bad of a bargain! Maybe it just a midwestern thing, but I love smoked sausage, well anything smoked really!  ;D  Just wanted to share.  Hope someone finds it useful.

I think lots of people will be quite pleased with this little nibble of info!  Thanks!

I'd like to add my little find...

Yesterday I sent FIL to the CoOp stores (not sure how far they extend) and he bought soured cream.  It was called the Ubley Brand from a dairy in Somerset and it's thick and rich and just like it is in the USA.  Not runny.  We have been using creme fraiche.  We had this with Cool Chili corn tortillas and Discovery brand Enchilada sauce (available at Sansbury's and Tesco) all wrapped around some lovely beef and topped with cheese.

Amazing enchiladas folks.  Even the FIL had two servings.

Im not familiar with the sausage you've mentioned here, but have you tried Mattesons?  They're in every supermarket, and sometimes a ridiculous bargain... i bought 3 the other day for 70p each.  See if you go into a chippy and you see the smoked sausages there (this might be a Scotland thing)... the Mattesons ones are the exact same thing.  In fact, i saw the lassie in the chippie opening a Matteson's packet one night!

I make a Matteson's sausage almost every week... slice it up and saute it in olive oil with potatoes, onions, garlic & chilli.... my DH loves it.

Speaking of 'smoked anything'... Lakeland sells these smoker bags.  They are foil bags with woodchips in between the layers of foil, and whatever you put in it.. meat, fish, veggies, etc comes out with a really nice smoky taste!

Thanks very much for the tip!

I haven't seen the Matteson's product here in NI.  Definitely have to look for it though on my next trip ti the supermarket!  That fry up sounds wonderful!  I will try those smoker bags from Lakeland.  Gotta love Lakeland!  I found some Weber Mesquite smoker chips here in NI and bought them.  They were ridiculously expensive, so I only use them for special items to smoke.    I would so love to have a smoker.  Maybe have to rig one up this spring.

Thanks again!

They sell the Mattesons sausages in even the crappest supermarkets here in Scotland, so i would be really surprised if you couldnt get it in NI.  It's with the cooked meats / lunch meats, in a foil pouch.
Hope you can find it.
