Politics, US Tariffs
« on: May 31, 2018, 05:07:29 PM »
I don't know if there are any longstanding members of the forum who could answer this question, but I am wondering if there is ever retaliation via immigration policy for US actions. I'm asking because of Donald Trump's announcement to levy tariffs on the EU, and wonder if that's going to have any effect on UK immigration policy toward Americans. I still have FLR and ILR to go, and am really enjoying living here, and hope that this kind of thing, and Trump's general cooling of relations with...er, everyone, won't be problematic. Thanks for any insights folks might have on this.

Glad you're all settled in.  :)

Don't worry, one has nothing to do with the other.

Thank you. We are just approaching one year, which is hard to believe. The challenges to establish and build a new life, but am liking it very much. I know it sounds a bit crazy, but I worry about these things. Thanks for the reply.

Not crazy at all, smart to be thinking ahead, but no, nothing to worry about there!  :)

You do have all your correspondence coming on paper ready for FLR, right?  :)

I have asked my bank, and our gas/electric provider to send paper bills with both our names on them. My wife is the UK citizen. I've set up an accordion folder for correspondence and it's all organised, along with her pay stubs since we've arrived. I don't want to have to do any kind of remedial work when the time comes. Plus, some friends in town who are of the same profile, an American and a Brit, have told me that an in person appointment in Solihull was, for them, a great less stressful way to apply for renewal. So, I think I'll go for that. And, we regularly take selfies in places we visit. I just want to make sure I do all that's needed, because I want to be here.

That's great! You'll need mail from more than 2 sources though, needs to be at least 3 so make sure you're covered there. No need to provide pics for the next one although some people do because it makes them feel more comfortable.

FLR is coming in pretty consistently at 6 weeks and has been for a good long time now so what many of us have done is to go with postal for FLR to save the money then have in in-person for ILR when you really don't want to be waiting any longer!
Totally up to you though!  :)

I didn't realise three sources were needed, but I am sure I have other mailings that have come over the year. Do you need for every month or every so many months?

It works out at every 4 months. 6 joint or up to 12 individual or a combination of the two.  From at least 3 sources. It's explained here. P63/4.

Thanks, if they just want 12 documents from the first visa period, from three sources, I already have that covered then: bank, utility company, council taxes. That should do it, right? Both our names are on all of these.

Thanks for the reference, it looks like, actually, six documents can cover it as long as both our names are on them. Here's the reference, and many thanks:

The items of correspondence should be addressed to you jointly or in both your names. Examples of acceptable items are listed below. The documents provided must be originals.
Photocopies are not acceptable.
The dates of the items of correspondence should be spread evenly over the whole period you are relying on. They should be from at least 3 different sources. If you do not have enough items in your joint names, you may also provide items addressed to each of you individually if they show the same address for both of you.
For example - Four items of correspondence in joint names to the same address and two items addressed to each partner at the address. In total eight items would need to be submitted.
If you and your partner have no bills or correspondence in joint names, you will need to submit twelve items (six each) of correspondence, evidencing that you reside together at the same address.
If you and your partner lived with relatives or friends for some or all of the period you are relying on, please provide a letter from the relative(s) and/or friend(s) con rming this.
If you did not live together for any part of the period you are relying on, tell us the reasons for this and whether you stayed in contact with each other during this time, and provide any relevant supporting evidence.
Please give an explanation on a separate sheet if you cannot provide six items; if the items are not addressed to both of you; or if they do not cover the period you are relying on.

And this bit:

Six items of correspondence addressed to you and your partner at the same address as evidence that you have been living together since your last grant of leave in this category, or from the date you  rst started living together up to a maximum of two years.

If they are all joint, you need 6 only. For each period that you didn't have one joint piece, you could if you wanted to, use 2 individual pieces. :)

Thanks for clarifying. They're all joint. So, that's six pieces that cover the period of the visa, right?

Yes, 6 pieces. Covering the correct time period. Three sources. Done :)
