Laptop going the other way...
« on: December 11, 2004, 12:20:32 PM »
Apologies in advance, as I'm sure this has been covered, but I can't seem to find it, and of course everything is coming to me at the last minute to take care of before I leave...

If I decide to take my laptop home to the States, is it as easy as just running up to Tottenham Court Road and buying a US AC cord?  And, are there batteries to be purchased which last longer than a mere 2 hours (which is what mine only seems to do, but so far I've used it rarely so it hasn't mattered).

Thanks!

Yeah as simple as that. I've never heard of any problems with running an appliance that is geared for 220 volts at a lower voltage. The problem is only the reverse, when you might fry a US machine.

The battery problem isn't related to this; it's just that batteries over time lose their recharge potential.

I'm a Brit and I use mine regularly in the states. I got the power cord I needed in Radio Shack.
You might find it easier to find a US cord in the US.

Thank you for the responses...

I actually pulled this crazy stunt and called HP directly ( ;)!) to ask; and they actually said all I need is a regular ol' adapter, not even a US plug.  But he did say I also do have the option of getting a US plug if I want, and it would be better to get it in the US.

Hi Elizabeth. Yes it is true. All you need is an inexpensive adaptor. That is the joy of modern laptops. There is no hassle as they are meant to go all over the world. I have had no problem bringing mine back and forth from the US to the UK. I bought a £4 adaptor and use it when I am in the UK and just plug my US cord in the socket when I am in the US and ready to go.  Don't bother buying a new cord as they cost at least $50.00. There really is no point.
