Distilled water for cool-mist humidifier
« on: July 31, 2018, 10:33:43 PM »
I tried to find an answer here on UKY and Googled too, but I guess the general consensus is that distilled water is very hard to find here in the UK. My son has a chesty cough and back in the States I would run a cool-mist humidifier to help loosen up the mucus and ease any congestion.

One forum said to use “Carplan” deionised water and I may send DH out to the 24 hour Asda to get a couple bottles. But curious, does anybody else use cool-mist humidifiers and what kind of water do you use? I prefer not to use tap water bc these contain minerals and can be expelled into the air and breathed in.

It appears that deionised water is corrosive and shouldn't be drunk. I wouldn't use it for your son's humidifier.

Oh wow. Thanks for that info larrabee! I wonder why they use deionised for car batteries though. Those are metal, right?

I’ll check at the chemist tomorrow too as some breathing apparatuses use distilled water. For tonight I guess it won’t hurt to use tap water. Amazon reviews for the humidifier said people had no problems with tap water but over time, like kettles and irons, there will be scale build up.

The water is fairly soft in Edinburgh which means it won't be so prone to limescale build up.
