Visa Renewal and Name Change
« on: August 01, 2018, 06:26:24 PM »
Hello everyone,

I am starting to gather my paperwork for my visa renewal after January 2019, (my visa expires in April 2019).  Due to the time constraints and the stress of the first visa application we chose to defer my name change until we got to England.

I am still under my married name for my first visa application (Biometric Residence Permit) and my passport.  I am going home at Christmas and planned to change my name there, through the Social Security Office, Drivers license, etc. - I am not sure if this needs to be done, but if anyone has any suggestions it would be great.

I have read that people are able to send passports to the embassy to have their name changed which also seems like a great option.  Basically, I just want to know what it is I have to do, what is optional, and whether a name change will confuse my next application.

Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

I take it you mean your BRP is in your maiden name?

You’ll need to do the name change through the embassy in the UK, as if you do it while you are in the US, you’ll likely have trouble rendering the UK, as your BRP and passport need to match.  You can do social security at the same time as your psssport.  I wouldn’t bother changing it on your US drivers license.

Once you return from your trip, apply for the passport with your married name from the embassy.  Then do your renewal after that (within 90 days) and you’ll be good to go.

Yes, I meant my BRP. Thank you this is very helpful! So great to know that this can all be done here!

So do I need to change my name on my BRP?  Or are you saying that I can just do my name change through the embassy right before I reapply and then my BRP will automatically update after the application?

The second one - the name on your BRP must be changed within 3 months of changing the name on your passport, so if you change the passport in the 3 months just before you apply for FLR(M), you won’t have to change your current BRP... instead your new visa BRP will simply be issued in your married name :).
