DEFINITELY visit the UK before you pack up your life and move.  And try to visit in the dead of winter when we are having short, damp, grey days.  Unfortunately no matter what you do, it'll like be a "holiday" and not a true test of what it's like living here.  But you likely won't know if you can do it until you try.  But the UK is not for everyone.  Just like the USA isn't for everyone.  :)

I was in England in February/March planned to stay for 2 weeks. During those two weeks, the Beast from the East hit the UK and we couldn't get to the airport!! I had to move my flight (they didn't charge me due to a natural disaster, score!) but they couldn't reschedule for an entire week! Which seems great, but I also didn't get paid for 3 weeks  :\\\'(

That being said, when my husband had to go back to work for my unexpected week there, I spent a lot of time in town alone, walking around, exploring, visiting coffee shops (I am a coffee enthusiast) etc etc. Gave me a really good idea of what it's going to be like when I move there and I'm unemployed for a little while.

I know it's not the -same- as living there, but all it did was confirm how much I absolutely love the UK.

I understand completely, due to finances, visiting isn't an option... so...I will be  plunging right in feet first..lol
Fortunately I have had a love affair with England since I was a little girl, so I have no hesitation's about moving, and welcome the adventure  ;)

hmm...I am not as much as an expert as some of these guys, but how long have you two been together? Has he traveled to visit you several times or just the once?

One major source of "relationship evidence" that is crucial to your application is boarding passes/trip itineraries/etc to prove that you have both visited each other. Just a marriage certificate doesn't cut it. If you haven't traveled to see him yet, it might be an issue.

They need a lot of proof that you two have been together and that your relationship is valid. Call logs and stuff like that might not be enough. Not trying to scare you! Just food for thought.

Can any of the experts confirm or deny this? I don't want to be giving false info.

They do have to believe that the relationship is genuine and  not a marriage of convenience but you only technically need to have met once in person.  :)

Yup, arranged marriages are allowed even.  Just need to be genuine.

On the relationship proof, we "met" on his Facebook page in January, well, I found his page in December last year but took a while to actually talk to him...lol... he came over in June and proposed at the airport, the video is on their website, as well as mine and his page and personal page..he had help with the employees to set the proposal up... also, he has a public Facebook page with thousands of followers that know him well for many years, and our relationship is very public on it. In addition to many photos from his trip here and a road trip we took... there is not a shortage of photos on his page or mine that would make anyone question our devotion to each other.  So, with all of that, I am hoping it won't be an issue.

You only submit one photo of you together, so no issue there.  Otherwise, you’ll want to keep call logs from communicating.  :)

I think it's great that you are so enthusiastic about your adventure and having the opportunity to explore the UK, and I don't want to come off too much as a negative Nancy, but IMO, it really is important to visit at least once before committing to moving your whole life here.  I've known proper Anglophiles who had a difficult time trying to live here, and even though they loved the UK, weren't able to like actually *living* here.  I would just hate to see you spend thousands on a visa, especially with tight finances, only to find out once you have been here for 3 weeks that you are unhappy as the UK wasn't what you were expecting.

So much this. I like the UK and have existing friendships scattered around the country but living here is so much more challenging than I ever expected. When funds are so tight its understandable that you can't afford extra flights, but also keep in mind all of the visa costs over the next few years as well. If you're a highly adaptable person then you may fare better than some of us!

Yup, someone last week told immigration he was coming to marry and they said "Congratulations" and stamped him through.  He had been crapping himself.  He was honest and of course it wasn't an issue.  As it's 100% allowed.  Vegas would go out of business if it wasn't.   ;D

To confirm, my husband did this back in 2013 and had no issue :) Unless times have REALLY changed in the last 5 years (which it doesn't appear they have as per the above), he should just be honest. It'll be fine.

Agree with this completely. I found it helped give me an idea of what life was like when I accidentally missed my flight home and had to reschedule for another few day's time so I ended up having my now-husband back at work, not the most amazing weather, and me left around the house/town by myself. if you can see what it'd be like even just a few days on your own doing mundane stuff to try to get some type of idea of independence here in the crappiest of crap weather, it can really help completely. I know you said it's not really possible financially, but I would urge you to at least consider giving it a bit more time before marrying and moving over when you've only met in person once and you haven't visited the country yet. Agree with others that I'm not trying to be negative, but just trying to give you a realistic idea as it's a long and expensive road ahead so it's something that you really really REALLY need to be sure of with a clear head.

Best of luck
My, how time flies....
