NIN Interview
« on: September 05, 2018, 05:10:24 PM »
Hi everyone!

I have my national insurance number interview tomorrow. On the phone they said i need to bring proof of address.

Will my tenancy agreement be enough?
I know it's not enough to get a bank account, but I'm hoping it will work for my NIN.

Have you tried calling them to ask? You might need post as it proves you are there and not just on the lease. But they could be more lenient.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I was on hold for 40 minutes this morning, so I'd really rather not call back unless I have to. I was hoping someone who went for their interview recently might remember.

From the government site-

National Insurance number interview

Jobcentre Plus may write to you and ask you to come to an interview where you’ll be asked about your circumstances and why you need a National Insurance number.

The letter will also tell you which documents to bring to prove your identity, such as:

    passport or identity card
    residence permit
    birth or adoption certificate
    marriage or civil partnership certificate
    driving licence

https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number

They should have told you what they want as proof of address. Can you phone the job centre and ask them?

If it's anything like registrar's offices the individual offices may have leeway. Have you tried calling the actual JobCentre Plus or waa it the number you booked your appointment on?

I had my appointment a couple of months back and I had to take a council tax bill with my name on it.  That’s seems to be the one thing everyone wants to prove address.

I decided to just call back this morning, and the woman on the phone said that the tenancy agreement will be fine.
I hope it is because the office they're having me go to is an hour tube journey away.

Thanks for your help everyone. :)

They do have some flexibility. In our son's case he was living with us so tenancy agreement and no council tax or utility bill in his name. They told him he could bring a signed letter from us stating that he was living with us, and that worked just fine at the interview.

Just wanted to update everyone. I went to the interview and they didn't even ask for proof of address. It was pretty quick and painless. :)

That's lucky!  They were really difficult with me back when I was applying for mine (2015/6).

I received my NI# yesterday, so it took a little under a month for anyone wondering what the wait time is like. :)
