Flu shot
« on: September 26, 2018, 12:37:33 PM »
Hi All,

I called a nearby medical centre to inquire about a flu shot and they say that unless I am over 65 and have a condition, I can't get a shot.

I used to annually get a flu shot back  in U.S so I am a bit puzzled. The receptionist said I can go to a pharmacy and try there..
Has anyone encounter this issue?  or do I have to fly back to NY to get it without hassle? lol

They are only available  free on the NHS to vulnerable groups. You can pay to get one at a pharmacy.

As others have said, only certain people can get them free on the NHS (I think young children, over 65s and people with certain medical conditions)

If you want to have a flu shot, you can get one done at pretty much any pharmacy for around £10-13. Just call or go into the pharmacy to book an appointment for a shot.

My company has actually offered to pay for flu shots for all their shift workers as they don’t want us all getting sick over Christmas (we work 24/7 shifts) :P.

Asda is usually the cheapest.  Definitely less than £10.   :)

And don't fly back to the USA and get one - as it'll be different than the one on offer in the UK!

Last year I got my flu shot at the same Boots where I get my prescriptions and while I completed the form the pharmacist, a lad who looked about 12, went and got the flu jab kit. When he’d finished I asked if I had to join the end of the line outside to pay and he told me that it was free. I pointed out that the form I had completed and given him clearly showed my date of birth which arithmetic would show that I was age 62. He was suitably embarrassed and when I was paying he thanked me for being so honest to which I replied that I was just doing my bit to save the NHS some money.

I'm confused (nothing new there).

I am 64, and I got a letter inviting me to go to a drop in centre on Friday for a flu jab.  Hubby is a couple of years younger than me and he got the same letter - but he has type two diabetes so I understand that.  I have osteoporosis.  I thought I would have to wait until I was 65 to be invited.

So I am wondering if I have to pay on Friday?

When’s your birthday? Just reading the link to the NHS website given above and it says:

65 and overs and the flu vaccine
You are eligible for the flu vaccine this year (2018/19) if you will be aged 65 and over on March 31 2019 – that is, you were born on or before March 31 1954. So, if you are currently 64 but will be 65 on March 31 2019, you do qualify.

Born June 1954 so shouldn't be eligible.

I was surprised to get an invitation.

If your husband qualifies due to his diagnosis, you probably qualify because you're in the same household. They wouldn't want you to pass anything to him.

Isn't it great?

Dave is on immunosuppressants and so gets his for free.  I probably would, too, as a result however I work for the NHS and get if for free through them anyway.  They don't want their employees picking things up during flu season (and I think the NHS trusts get a lot of money if a certain percentage of the employee population is vaccinated).

I'm grateful for all of you getting your shots cuz I am so allergic to the US one that I'm a bit terrified to try it here. Herd immunity helps!

I get the flu jab due to my medical conditions, and DH is eligible for one due to living in the same household and potentially being my carer - even though he wouldn't qualify otherwise.  I'm not sure if it's a UK-wide policy, or something that individual trusts decide.
