Transferring money to the UK
« on: December 18, 2018, 07:04:08 PM »
Hi everyone,  I need advise on transferring money to my husband. I called my bank and they can do it but it will cost about 50.00 dollars, does this seem about the right rate or is there anywhere cheaper that you all may know of
Thank you  ???

Does he have a UK bank acct? Seems a little high. I transfer pounds into my US acct thru Bank of America and it's quite low.

It's important not just to look at the fee but  also to take into consideration the rate that they are giving you. Do a like for like comparison and see how they stack up

But yes, for smallish amounts no-one here has been able to beat Transferwise.

Ok, I did look at the comparison rates and it seemed the highest out of the list available

I started replying in the other thread, and didn't see this one. I know you've already done it, but I already wrote a reply, so I'm gonna post it here anyway :P.

Hi everyone,
I have a question about transferring money from the US to UK.. is it just as easy to call my bank and have them do a transfer? It will cost about 50.00 , does this seem about the normal rate  ??? Thank you

It's usually A LOT more expensive to do an international transfer through your bank than through a site like TransferQise.

TransferWise will probably only cost a fraction of the amount, depending on how much you transfer in one go. Plus, you can usually get better exchange rates with TransferWise as well.

As an example, if I want to transfer $100 to my US account from my UK account, it will cost me £80.23 in total (exchange rate of 1.26 plus a fee of £1.12). It will arrive in my US account in 1-2 business days.

But if I do it directly through my UK bank, arriving in 2-4 business days, it will cost me £111.46... with an exchange rate of 1.23 (£80.96), plus a bank handling fee of £22 and a foreign bank handling fee of £8.50. Or if I want it sent quickly (1-2 business days), it will cost me £119.46.

It is just crazy how much it can cost... the chick at the credit union acted offended when I asked if there were any online sites may be cheaper  ::)  I wanna call her back and say "nanny nanny boo boo lady"  ;D
