I started replying in the other thread, and didn't see this one. I know you've already done it, but I already wrote a reply, so I'm gonna post it here anyway

Hi everyone,
I have a question about transferring money from the US to UK.. is it just as easy to call my bank and have them do a transfer? It will cost about 50.00 , does this seem about the normal rate
Thank you
It's usually A LOT more expensive to do an international transfer through your bank than through a site like TransferQise.
TransferWise will probably only cost a fraction of the amount, depending on how much you transfer in one go. Plus, you can usually get better exchange rates with TransferWise as well.
As an example, if I want to transfer $100 to my US account from my UK account, it will cost me £80.23 in total (exchange rate of 1.26 plus a fee of £1.12). It will arrive in my US account in 1-2 business days.
But if I do it directly through my UK bank, arriving in 2-4 business days, it will cost me £111.46... with an exchange rate of 1.23 (£80.96), plus a bank handling fee of £22 and a foreign bank handling fee of £8.50. Or if I want it sent quickly (1-2 business days), it will cost me £119.46.
