I don't use a purse, per se. I just had the camera bag with all the stuff in it, and one of the compartments would have my wallet in it. Hmm. I think what you guys are telling me is that I've been lucky.
I've been travelling that way for years. On a plane, all my stuff goes into a backpack under my seat and I don't usually take anything to the bathroom with me. There's no way I'd be able to wrestle my whole bag out from under the seat and then lift it over everyone to get out.
The only time I was really careful about making sure my bag always stayed with me was when I was travelling on night buses in South America... because it's very common for people to sneak onto the buses and steal money and bags while you're sleeping. So I slept with all my cash in a money belt (zip facing inwards and against my back), and used my backpack as a leg rest (hooking my leg around the straps), so that no one could get at it without disturbing me. A British girl on one of our buses actually had her entire bag stolen during the journey - it had her passport and everything in it
