1st Time UK Twxes
« on: January 10, 2019, 06:42:00 PM »
Probably late as I just now became aware of the Self-Assessment deadline last fall and now have to file.
Pretty basic questions here.
- I’m USC in UK on a spouse visa, arrived in Feb 2018
- I’ve been retired since Jan 2017, only Income is US-based pensions
- Wife’s only Income is small UK pensions.
- I filed a 2017 1040 last year
- Where do I even start with filing a UK return?

Thanks in advance for the help to this pretty basic question.

First thing to do is register for self assessment. Once you have your UTR you can then complete a self assessment online.

That was kinda why I was asking. It says the deadline for the self-assessment was 5-Oct last year.
Generally, if I have no UK Income and paid US taxes do I still need to file?

The deadline for filing self assessment online is January 31st, 2019

The UK taxes you on your worldwide income, just like the USA does, so if your worldwide income is over £11,500 for tax year 2017/18 then you are required to file and pay taxes to HMRC. When you file your US taxes with the IRS you claim the UK taxes back as a tax credit.

The USA is almost unique in that it taxes its citizens no matter where they live. Every other country taxes its residents on their income as they are benefiting from the taxes paid to run the country they live in. When I was living in the USA my UK income was taxed by the IRS but was exempt from HMRC taxes.

Certain US income is exempt from HMRC taxes such as government pensions (not SS, which is taxed by HMRC).

You can register now and file once you have a UTR.  HMRC may (but may not) charge penalties at this stage.

It would have saved you a great deal of nuisance if you had paid tax to HMRC no later than 31 December 2018. Do remember to pay HMRC by 31 December 2019 and to amend the 2018 US return next year to carry back excess foreign tax credits from your 2019 US income tax return.
