What do/did you eat for your American Christmas?
« on: December 20, 2004, 01:04:34 PM »
We're voluenteering all day on Christmas Day with the Salvation Army.  I'm excited as i think this is a great way for us to spend our first Christmas together-but i know we will be shattered at the end of the day.  We'll have to drive back into Central London where we live and just want to hang.

So, i'm going to do an american christmas at home.  (we're having the turkey and all on boxing day with his family).

So what did you normally have?

We did ham, so i'm going to get a small ham from waitrose and heat it up.  What else should i serve with it?  Sweet potatoe?  (i could do my brown sugar and maple syrum yams again).  Some kinda green veg?

I need something that's easy but yummy.  We already splurged on an excellent bottle of wine.....so just curious!

We have turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, peas and carrots, biscuts(bread), a pasta and pea dish, stuffing, cranberries, and gravy. Along with a taco dip and chips, chocolate silk pie, cherry pie and apple pie. Along with cookies and other sweets. We feed about 15 on this day so we needs lots of food.

We're looking for something different to do. My family (in the US) does what is basically a traditional British Sunday roast for their Christmas meal (roast beef and yorkshire puds). They often add ham and lots of veggies and side dishes. My DH's family does for xmas what to me is essentially Thanksgiving - turkey and the trimmings.

Aimiloo, I think just ham is great. How bout a green veg or green salad and some ooey gooey potatoes gratinee or something like that? You can pre-bake on the 24th and finish them off when you get home on the 25th. A decadent chocolate dessert is  a must, too!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

You've got to have scalloped potatoes with ham!! They're made for each other!

Homemade macaroni & cheese....goes great with ham and if you toss peas in it, you've got a veggie!  ;)

My family in the US keep things very low key... no big fancy dinners.   My mom always made home-made cinnamon rolls for our Christmas morning breakfast, and then Christmas Day lunch/dinner was always grinders!
She'd buy all the gear from the Italian deli... ham, turkey, salami, provalone cheese, pepper jack, lettuce & tomato, and the whole lot drizzled with olive oil... and make these massive sandwiches... 'grinders' is what we called them in So Cal... most of you probably know them as submarine sandwiches?

Our Christmas food tradition was a bit odd--- always pizza on christmas eve (quick and easy to get the kids to bed at a reasonable hour :-) ) We used to have ham when I was little--- but it ended up switching to steak simply because it was everyone's favorite on christmas day-- and dad could do it on the grill; giving mom a break!

Amiloo,

The wonder of Waitrose has it all ;)

There is a lovely sweet caramel glazed gammon joint ready to go, in the fridge section, their fine tipped asparagus is particularly nice round about now ( just had some with dinner!) and in the freezer, the specialist desserts, by the french patisserie guy has two individual chocolate puddings (crunchy on the outside and molten on the inside ) all in one spot!

Might save time, money and energy when you're so tired and btw, kudos for the volunteering

Some years we do turkey, but this year....

Roast beef w/Yorkshire puds
Roast potatoes
Brussels sprouts
Brown gravy
Apple pie
Pumpkin pie
Trifle

Yum!   ;D

We had our Christmas dinner on the 24th because the kids were going to see their dad on the afternoon of the 25th.

Our traditional Christmas morning breakfast....toad-in-the-hole and fresh oranges!!!  My kids used to wonder if I used real toads....I'd say nothing and let them keep on wondering!  >:D

When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.
