Pickles?
« on: April 20, 2019, 05:27:15 PM »
Is it possible to get pickles (the thick, dill, American kind) anywhere there? I have looked in stores when I have been there and have yet to find them. I'd settle for sliced. Anything to put on a sandwich! :) I can make my own if I can get pickling cucumbers. Are there those? LOL. I love pickles.

Sometimes you can find polish dill pickles, but I buy vlassic at the garden center by me. I feel lucky they are there! They have grape jelly too, but its too pricey for me to justify.

I used to get them at Sainsbury’s and then they changed the recipe and added sugar to them. I think you can buy them online in various American websites

Not sure where you are - but in Glasgow/Edinburgh there's a place called Lupe Pintos and they quiet often have Vlassic Kosher Dill Spears. Be ready to take out a bank loan to pay for them.

You can find baby cukes at the start of summer at some grocery stores. They're not much of a thing here (pickling cukes).  Good luck!

Use my trick.. get the Mrs Elwoods Dill spears from Asda, put in a big teaspoon of lazy garlic, a few shakes of crushed red chilli , give it a shake and put in fridge for 5 days... Viola, Kosher Dill pickles.

When I first tried the Mrs Elwoods I didn't like them all that much, too sweet. Now it's been so long since I tasted a decent pickle, I've forgotten what one should taste like so have been eating them anyway!

But that's a great idea to make them taste better!  :D

Get the Haimisha cucumbers next time  - they are like the ones you ate in your former life!  :)

Pickles I have happily consumed in the UK:

* Dawtona sour gherkins (Tesco)
* Bramwell pickled gherkins with chili (Aldi)
* Vlasic stackers (South African store on Amazon)
* Vlasic dill pickles (South African store on Amazon)

By far, the easiest/cheapest to obtain are the Aldi ones, and I use them for pickle salad, sliced on burgers, and as a palate-cleanser in our several-times-a-week cheese & port times.  The Polish ones (Dawtona) are probably closer to taste, but they require a Tesco shop.  And getting actual Vlasic ones require pretending I don't know how much I'm overpaying for the things... and that's a big ask.

The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.
