Household stuff
« on: June 25, 2019, 04:10:30 PM »
I'm still 3 years out from moving but want to gradually decrease what we own so its not a mad rush at the end. I have zero sentimental attachment to any of our furniture here as its mostly hand me downs so I figure we will sell all we can and just buy everything new or used there. What did you wish youd shipped or regret shipping?

I wish I had shipped my mattress.  I still miss my beloved USA mattress to this day.

Just an FYI, you will find MUCH higher quality furniture for a MUCH cheaper price in the USA than you will in the UK.  As your move is a long way out, you may just want to buy what you love and ship it.  And you can enjoy it between now and your move as well.

Sometimes when you live life waiting for something else to happen in the future, you miss out on living life, you know?   :D

Is a random USA mattress any better than a high quality mattress from a decent shop like John Lewis?  Genuinely curious because I left the US before I was old enough to care about mattresses.

KFDancer is right, furniture here is both shockingly expensive and shoddy.

Well I had a US king sized mattress that I bought at Sam's Club for $600 and it was AMAZING.  I've had 3 different mattresses here (excluding guest room mattresses) and they one I have now is "fine" with a memory foam topper on top.  But I miss just a good spring mattress with a pillow top that you can flip!  And I miss Box Springs.

So yes, after dropping a bomb on a (UK king, US queen) mattress at John Lewis, I'm pretty happy.  But it's 4 years old and really needs replacing already as it's really saggy, no matter how much we turn it.

KF, I have two words for you: pocket springs.  We have a Vispring mattress, and it's affectionately known as "Cloud" because it's like sleeping on one.  They're guaranteed forever, too.  Well, thirty years, or something.  I don't know how the guarantee works.  I hope we never need it.

When my husband told me about this brand, I said, "Who spends that much on a mattress?!"  I was utterly shocked, because, generally speaking, my husband is as frugal as I am.  But then I learned about them, and we went to a shop and tried one.  And now we have Cloud.  :)

I've never had the perfect mattress, or pillow for that matter!

They have some very fancy names, do you remember which one you chose?

These look nice! I'm curious which you chose too. We probably have 5 years left on ours (replaced last year) but I like that they are natural. Wish I'd known about them last year!

Returning from the USA to UK in February I had a very light box as a checked piece of luggage.

Person checking our bags, "what is inside the box?"
Me, "Pillows"
Her, "Huh?"
Me, "Are you British or American?"
Her, "American"
Me, "You don't know how spoiled you are with amazing pillows at affordable prices."
Her, "You learn something new everyday"

My husband could NOT believe I was bringing pillows back.  He LOVES my pillow and tries to pretend it's his EVERY NIGHT.  Yes, it was a 2 pack but he has not earned the extra pillow due to major eye rolls and tutting at my buying said pillows.  ;D

We 'only' got the Devonshire, and I believe we opted for medium firmness.  I know we went for the same firmness on both sides (you can specify if you and your sleeping partner have different preferences), so ours can be flipped and rotated without giving us the wrong firmness.

I didn't even manage to find a decent pillow there but I am sure I could have looked a lot harder!  ;D
