Step down transformer for a vitamix blender
« on: August 02, 2019, 09:14:11 AM »
The thought of selling my $500 vitamix blender for $250, if I’m lucky, and having to buy a new one there is breaking my heart especially since it’s the 6300 series which was discontinued.   Does anyone have any experience with using a step down transformer on any electronics they brought over and how did it work?

It says in the manual that it’s a ~2 peak output horsepower motor
Electrical:  120 V. 50/60 Hz 11.5 A
Uses a U.S.A three-prong grounded cord

Any help or insight would be appreciated

The fact that it's rated for 50 or 60 Hz nulls any argument I would have made against bringing it over.  The US electrical grid runs at 60 Hz, while the UK and Europe are on 50 Hz.  For some appliances/tools, this difference in frequency can negatively impact performance, but your machine is apparently rated for both, so with the step-down transformer, I should think it would work just fine.  You'll need a transformer that's at least 1265 watts (input power of 110v x 11.5 amps).

Thank you...that’s what I wanted to hear. ;D   I was looking on amazon.uk at them.  They have a 2000 watts one.  Am I better off getting the highest wattage I can even though it’s more then needed Or am I better getting one closer to the wattage I need?  Sorry for my ignorance.....I usually don’t think past just plugging it in and expecting it to work..... not sure if bigger is better in this case or if over kill will kill it ?????? I would err toward more wattage than you need, but don't go too crazy, because I expect the price increases with the wattage.  But if you think you'll use it for anything else simultaneously, you'll want to be sure it can handle the load.

When I looked on amazon.co.uk it was £90 for a 1500 watt and £105 for a 2000 watt.....for 15 quid difference  I’m better off going for more power....and it’s a lot cheaper then the £550 to replace my vitamix with a similar model.

Yeah, agreed.  For £15, get the 2000 watt one.  Check the reviews for it, both on and off of Amazon, though.  I'm sure it's safety rated and fine, but it doesn't hurt to look around to make sure you're not getting a knock-off that skirts regulations or something.

Just make sure you'll have the space for both the transformer and the blender. We have a baby ninja due to space but I miss my blendtec!

I just re-read your initial post and saw that it says input power of 120V, not 110V.  The correct calculation should be 120 x 11.5 = 1380 watts.  Either transformer will still work, but I felt the need to acknowledge my error and give the correct information (especially in case you went for the cheaper transformer and ran another item on it at the same time).

Definitely get the larger rated one.

Yeah, go with higher wattage. Sometimes when a machine starts up they draw a slightly heavier current than when just "on".

I have two step-down transformers here that I have had on for two years. One handles my older computer, my VOIP telephone adapter, and electric alarm clock, using a USA extension cord.  The other runs my  LP turntable and some video equipment we brought over. I REALLY regret not bringing my old metal 1950s Wearing blender.

Thing to remember - if you ever want to use an extension cord on the transformer, it's pretty much impossible to get a USA-type one here. Bring a few. Also, be sure they are not attached to a surge protector as that can cause a feedback loop (?) that can cause either the transformer to trip off, or your circuit breaker to trip off.

Thank you all for the great advice.  My vitamix blender and I thank you 🙏.  Good call on bringing an extension cord...just in case....mostly just want the transformer for my blender but the extension cord might come in handy for using the curling irons and such and being able to reach a mirror.  Those are pretty much the only electrical items bringing....and my computer....

Don’t know how to post a picture of it...but the one looking at on Amazon was a Bronson++2000 Watt....if anyone has a suggestion of a good brand to buy, please let me know.

Thanks all 😘

I have this model and they've been working well for me.
