Real ID while overseas
« on: September 13, 2019, 05:44:51 PM »
Hello! Not sure what board to put this on, I’m going home to visit and my us driving license is due for renewal. My state has switched to the real id now so I will need to get this. I’ve checked the requirements and I now have to show two documents proving proof of residence in the state! I haven’t officially lived at home since I moved to the uk but I also am not ready to give up my drivers license as we will eventually move back home. How do I prove residence? Should I open a bank account? I’ve also got to show proof of name change as my passport is still in my maiden name but my license and social security number are in my married name. I’ve only got a few weeks until I’m home until I need to get this sorted and I’m very stressed! Any advice would be much appreciated!

You're no longer a resident... It stinks, but it means you'll probably have to renew your license when you move back.

Just in case it's possible, which state? Some members here may have maintained one there.

Thank you for the reply! I’m from RI.

That really sucks, I wasn’t ready to give it up just yet!  :-\\\\ oh well, it’s not the end of the world!

The main purpose of Real ID is to tighten up security and authentication of id documents such as drivers licenses. If you can get a driver's license without being resident then that is a major flaw in the implementation of State and Federal laws.

Personally I would wait until I returned home rather than lie on official documents stating that I was a resident.

So, it looks like since you have a US passport you don't need a real ID? I just had a look through the license renewal section on their DMV. You can renew online, it could be worth trying? I wouldn't lie about being a resident on official forms when you aren't, but if they let you send it to your parents house without it needing to be your permanent residence that's probably OK.
