Anyone read any Frank McCourt books? "Angela's Ashes" was fabulous! I just ordered "Tis" which is the sequel. Oh by the way I got it from Amazon used in good condition for 1p. lol  How cheap am I? :)

I read Tis.  It's good.  I've never read Angela's Ashes.  But Tis is a fitting sequel to a book that deals with depressing issues.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

It's called, "A Monk Swimming" by his brother Malachy.  Haven't read it but the reviews on Amazon were only so-so.  I loved Angela's Ashes (although I thought his Mum was a bit of a wet blanket) but thought Tis was only OK.

Totally useless knowledge:  Malachy McCourt was on the ABC soap operas Ryan's Hope and One Life to Live...

He was on One Life to Live when his brother's first book came out, I think.  He played Thomas Kenneally (1995, 1996-1997).  He's been an actor for a long time - has had radio shows, done TV movies...he has a website.  www.malachymccourt.com

Read the first 100 pages of 'Tis last night. Its a remarkable story and nearly hard to believe. I cant seem to put it down. Last night my husband must have thought I was a lunatic because I was crying one minute and laughing the next.
I feel so sorry for Frank. I just wanna give him a big hug. Hardly a page passes where he doesnt mention his horrible sore eyes and his awful teeth. :(
He just got sent to Army clerk school.....
Very good read!

I read Angela's Ashes when it was first published and met Frank McCourt when my then husband was doing graphic design for a small book seller's in Manchester, Vermont.  I thought it was brilliant and he was a very nice and funny man.  Several months later he won the Pulitzer for it and became a national celebrity.  Angela's Ashes is very funny, for such a grave story.  I love when people infuse humor into storytelling- it makes it so much more interesting.  Tis was wonderful as well.

Pebbles, how did you get it for 1p?  I think I got a book for about 25, but 1, how do they make a profit :P

They over-charge on postage!
I paid 29p for a book and they charged me £2.75 postage.... i never looked at the actual postage that was on it, but it was only a wee paperback, and shouldnt have cost more than £1 to post, i reckon.

But even so... it's still usually a great deal.

Pebbles, i bought Angela's Ashes and Tis together as a set, and it came with a video called something like 'McCourt's Limerick'.  If i can find it (amongst DH's thousands of videos  >:(   ) perhaps you'd like a lend of it?
