Rejected Tax Return
« on: February 03, 2020, 12:12:00 PM »
Hello there! Apologies for this being long winded:

I filed my tax return last week with Turbo Tax. I am filing separate due to my husband being the UK citizen and is considered a non-resident alien. When I was filing my tax return it asked for his SSN or ITIN, which he has neither. I filled in the SSN with 999-99-9998 (which was recommended on a form from a year ago), and it came back rejected for invalid SSN.

So I am trying to figure out what's the best way to correct this? I can't seem to get a clear enough answer on IRS's website. Do we need to apply for a ITIN in which case that can take 7 weeks, and then would I just resubmit my tax forms via mail? I've never done my taxes (federal or state) through the mail, so how would I know they were approved? And if I owe the state some money, would I just send them a check with the state tax form?

I will plan to send in a statement explaining I am living overseas to get the automatic 2 month extension for June when I resubmit, was just hoping I could get it done now without any issues.

Any direction would be great! Thank you!

For TurboTax you enter the bogus number, then it needs to be whited out and NRA or non resident alien entered I believe.

An ITIN is not required. You can presumably print and mail the return to the IRS. The FBAR is due to be filed by 15 October, but must be e-filed.
