When to apply for renewal FLRM
« on: February 04, 2020, 05:14:09 PM »
I will be applying for my 2nd have of my FLRM. My current visa is valid from 08-11-2017 until 08-05-2020. From what I have read you have to wait until you have been here 30 months before you can renew, however my visa is valid for exactly 30 months. They also say that you can apply 28 days before the expiry. If I do that however I will not have been here for 30 months yet when I renew. Is that okay? Will that mean I will fall short of the 60 months on my 2nd visa?

Thank you !

Did you arrive in the UK on a fiancé visa, Tier 2 visa or Tier 4 visa and then switch to FLR(M) from inside the UK?

If so, the earliest you can apply is 28 days before your visa expires (28 days before you reach 30 months on your FLR(M) visa).

So you can apply any time between 10th April and 8th May 2020

Thanks for the help. I originally came over in 2015 on a Tier 2 and then switched to FLRM. I know that my clock restarted when I switched. I was just confused about whether I could apply 28 days before my current visa expired even though it had not been 30 months yet. Thanks for answering that I can.

So does that mean that I will basically have only 1 day to apply for ILR if I do priority service since they only issue the visas for 30 months? I have heard of some people getting a little longer than 30 months but is that just by luck.

Thanks as always for your help!

It is a strong possibility that you could end up with a 1-day application window for ILR if you do Super Priority for this application on the earliest date you're eligible.  Even though you can apply for your second FLR(M) 28 days before 30 months from the first one, I would question the value of it.  Definitely consider not using super priority if you do!  It's nice to have a flexible date range for the ILR application.
9/1/2013 - "fiancée" (marriage) visa issued
4/6/2013 - married (certificate issued same-day)
5/6/2013 - FLR(M)#1 in person -- approved!
8/1/2016 - FLR(M)#2 by post -- approved!
8/5/2018 - ILR in person -- approved!
22/11/2018 - Citizenship (online, with NDRS+JCAP) -- approved!

That is so frustrating because I will need to use the priority service as I travel for work. Otherwise I would not use the service (or pay the crazy extra fees for it either). I will apply the last week of April so hopefully that will buy me a few extra days. Thanks again for all the help.

Remember that you can choose any date for your super priority appointment you like and that you only have to submit the online application by May 8th.

So, if you wanted to buy some time, you could apply online at the end of April or early May, but then choose a super priority appointment date a few weeks later in late May. That way, your visa would be issued in late May 2020 and would expire in late November 2022, which would give you 1.5 months to apply for ILR (11th October to late November).

There seems to be a feeding frenzy to go for FLR as soon as you can. I thought that was what you should do but listened to the forum and applied a bit later. We did go for super priority and our documents were scanned at the appointment and sent to the Home Office there and then.  We got our decision (approval) in less than four hours!  Our application was simple and straightforward.

The BRP was delivered on Monday (our BRP appointment was last Thursday).  The BRP has the expiry date a couple of months after the five year arrival anniversary.  That gives us a bit of space if we need it.

Once more, the forum knows what it is talking about.

No problem :).

In fact, if you were not using super priority and just wanted a standard free biometrics appointment, there is often a wait of 1-2 months for those appointments, which means that unless you paid for one of the earlier enhanced appointments, you would buy yourself a couple of months anyway: 1-2 months for the appointment, then another 1-2 months for the visa to be issued, which would mean that even though the FLR(M) would only be valid for 30 months, but the time you actually received it, you could actually have a window of 2-4 months to apply for ILR.

I wish I didn't have to use the super priority option because I can think of a lot of other things I would rather spend that money on :)

If your work is requiring it, I’d ask them to pay the fee. Otherwise they can wait six weeks. ;)

My thoughts exactly! If they are eager for you to pay the extra fee get them to fund it!
