I was in the US for 6 weeks between December 2018/January 2019. I transferred most of my money to my US account, but still left enough in my UK account to cover my direct debits. I used only my US account during this time, and checked my UK account just every couple weeks. During this time, an unauthorized charge was made on my UK account, which put it into the overdraft. My car insurance direct debit was due around this time. There were a few attempts to take money out. This was unsuccessful, and my insurance was cancelled. This all happened in about a week and a half. Since I wasn't checking my UK account that frequently, I had no idea (lesson learned). I didn't receive any emails from my insurer but they did send letters, which I didn't see until I got home.
My question is.... for how long do I need to declare (such as for car insurance quotes) that I've had insurance cancelled? Obviously I told my most recent insurer about it. I doubt that 30 years from now or something, I'll still need to mention it.
