My impression is that this will be an overall good move?

Could we expect any different? It matches the general Brexit philosophy, even if it is just adding on to the current point based system.

Curious if it will ever come to affect spousal visas.

I think this is going to further the black market for low income workers :( Many Europeans came to do difficult work that isn't well paid like caring and farm work, there is still no way for those jobs to be filled and since they are high turnover/high injury roles you need a huge base to pull from. The UK is headed for an employment crisis in my opinion, but how quickly it happens remains to be seen.
