MFS, spouse has no TIN, can I file online?
« on: March 30, 2020, 04:38:50 PM »
I am overseas born and raised US citizen, married. I file MFS as my spouse has no link to the US and does not want to enter the tax system. So I put a dummy social security number in the spouse TIN field. This means in the past I cannot efile, instead I print it out.

Is this still the case or might something have changed this year. Is there any way I can efile MFS with spouse not having TIN? (I use turbotax normally but would use something else if it would allow this).

I am following the guidance here which suggests (June 2019) paper filing is the only option:

I am in the same situation.  We just got married last year so this is all new to me.

You need to write "NRA" (Nonresident alien) in the box that asks for your spouse's Social Security #.  I don't think you'll be able to e-file.

Here's a link to the IRS 1040 instructions giving that guidance.  See page 13, bottom of the first paragraph under "Married Filing Separately".

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf

This link gives some guidance from Turbo Tax on what dummy Social Security #'s to use that won't generate error messages.  Then once you print the forms, use white out on the dummy # and write NRA.

Hope this helps!
