ILR- scan documents as pdf.

hi to all, i am preparing for my ilr soon. i started  scanning  documents using my iphone or ipad  but i found that the size of the documents sometimes  are big.Are there any apps that can help me to reduse the size of the pdf which is reliable and secure as you know some  documents may have a  personal nformation .Thank you.

What DPI are you scanning with? From a Google search (cuz I'm doing the same tomorrow so it was helpful) it looks like most scanners default to 300DPI but you only need 72. Also make sure it's a black and white scan if you don't need the colour in there.

You can also use an online tool like this one to lower the size of your pdfs:

ilovepdf [dot] com/compress_pdf

Just make sure to watch for quality drop and ensure everything is still easily readable. 

That site can also convert from Word doc into PDF, or combine multiples into one (merge).

I use the CamScanner app on an iPhone. I have not done it for this yet, but I have used it a lot in the past and it was fine.

I just uploaded my scans yesterday based on the information in this thread. The site recommends 150dpi (not 72dpi), so I may go back and rescan mine just to make sure the quality is high enough. They do not want colour scans; just B&W.

I am wondering if the new uploading the documents yourself is here to stay or is it a response to Covid 19?  My application isn't due for a few months but I've started working on it and If I can go ahead and scan the needed documents when I get to that part, it would be amazing. as my application time will be around the holidays I'd like to get as much done as possible as early as possible.

It has nothing to do with Covid-19.

Uploading your documents yourself is the new method of applying for the visa and it was introduced way before Covid-19 even existed.... around late 2018, if I remember correctly.

You either have the option to scan and upload everything yourself at home, or you can pay extra for them to scan and upload the documents for you at your biometrics appointment.

Do you know how much that costs for them to scan them? Do they attach it to your application right there or do you send that first?

You don't send anything. Everything is uploaded, either at home, or at your appointment. Your application is online-only now, so it is not sent anywhere.

When you submit your application, you then create an account with the UKVCAS website. You can either upload all your documents there (before your appointment), or you can pay for them to upload the documents at the appointment.

When you book your appointment, you can select different services:
- a free appointment (biometrics only) = £0
- an out-of-hours/same day/next day appointment (biometrics only) = £110
- document scanning which can be added to a free or £110 appointment = £49.99
- document checking which can be added to a free or £110 appointment = £44.99
- Enhanced appointment which includes document checking AND scanning = about £69
- Premium lounge appointment (includes document scanning) = £210 - £270

You can only book certain services at certain UKVCAS centres, so you will need to check which ones offer the service(s) you want.
