Dual Resident - OK to keep US and UK licenses?
« on: June 07, 2020, 05:54:03 PM »
I grew up in UK and  passed my test there gaining Green paper license. Then I moved to USA and stayed 40 yrs so have a US license too
Recently came back to UK and updated Green paper to UK photocard at my UK address

I intend to stay 6 months in UK and 6 months in USA for the foreseeable future so I am a true 'dual resident'

Is it  ok for me to keep valid US and UK licenses or do I I need to cancel/suspend one of them every 6 months ?

There is no problem with your licences being dual resident.

Make sure your insurers (car and house) know you will be gone half the time.  Regular UK policies don't allow for such long periods away as standard.

I agree with Larrabee. Definitely check on your house insurance for long periods away. We left once for a 3 month trip back to the USA and had to inform the insurance company and pay extra for those months.
Dual USC/UKC living in the UK since May 2016

Good I thought so but wanted to check.

I was apprehensive when I called to get UK Car insurance having been out of the country for 40 years but the key question they  asked was 'have you lived in the UK for 3 years'  and knowing they record all conversations I answered truthfully 'Yes' .
I suppose if I had emigrated at age 5 the answer would still be yes!
They could have asked me if I had lived in UK for last 3 years  or had a UK license for 3 years etc but they didn't.

As far as I can tell,  US insurers don't care if anyone visits empty property  or uses a car - ever !

In UK I have off-street parking so can SORN the car when not in UK and it is so old I would be lucky if it was stolen.

With house insurance in UK  looks like they all typically have a max 30 days continuously unoccupied rule but I have family in the next village who check the house every week and ' stay' at least one night per month to satisfy the Insurance.

Getting insurance is easy. It's when insurers have to pay out on a claim that they look to see if you are "insured".

I’ve done exactly this since 2015.  I divide my time, approximately, between my US and my UK home.  I maintain current driving licenses in both New York and the UK.  AFAIK, I fulfill the various requirements of being a resident in both those places.

I don’t own a car in England, though, because I don’t fancy leaving it idle for months at a time.
