Have the sponsor sign part 2. We had no joint accounts so I hadn't, but UKVI emailed and said the application wasn't valid until they did.

Ah, we might be talking about 2 different things.

If I remember correctly, there are 2 forms for the sponsor to sign:
- Sponsor's declaration of application
- Part 2 Consent to Checks form

So, I believe you have:
Part 1: Applicant signs
Part 2: Sponsor (and anyone else jointly named on evidence) signs (consent to checks)
Part 3: No one signs (consent to checks)
Sponsor declaration of application: Sponsor signs

Nope, I am speaking about part 2 there. That is exactly what UKVI contacted me to say my sponsor must sign and sent with instructions to that effect. He had completed the sponsor declaration separately.

Nice one, thanks.

Under part 2, would that cover a signed letter from the applicant’s employer, plus people like our landlord whose name is on our tenancy agreement? Assume not as that would seem like overkill!

No, I don’t think so... as the employer and landlord are not named on your payslips or tenancy agreement, they are simply the person writing the letter.

So it covers things like:
- joint bank accounts
- joint council tax statements
- joint utility bills
- joint tenancy agreements/mortgage statements (more than 1 person rents or owns the house you live in)

So, a situation where someone else other than the sponsor might sign would be if you live with housemates/flatmates and their names are on the tenancy agreements and utility bills as well as your names.

Or if you co-own the house you live in with a sibling, parent or a friend, and their name is on the deed/mortgage as well as yours.

Most people will only have bills/statements in joint names with their sponsor so it’s not that common for anyone other than the sponsor to need to sign it.

Thanks for your help so far everyone - we're getting close to finalising the app and have most of our supporting docs prepared - so hopefully on the home straight (and then the dreaded wait for the app/appointment...)

We went to the bank (Barclays) yesterday to try and get statements covering the past 7 months but were told these can only be sent via mail.  These are due to arrive in next few days with a 'digital stamp' on each page and a covering letter stating they are authentic.  Hopefully the Home Office is familiar with this but just wanted to check if anyone has heard of this being an issue?

If they send them through the post, they are original, so nothing to worry about.

Not an issue in the slightest.

In fact, it's preferrable if they are sent through the post as they are considered original and official, so they don't need to be stamped or signed by the bank.

Just before we hit submit we want to make sure we have everything prepared in terms of supporting documents - I seem to remember someone saying there is guidance on what file names to use for docs - does anyone know where we can find this?

It's in the UKVCAS website FAQs, page 16:

Ah thank you ksand24!

We paid for the IHS yesterday and got an error message after payment. The £1000 has left our account and we got the confirmation email, but haven’t received the actual IHS reference number yet... any ideas if this usually takes a little while - or should we have got it instantly?

The IHS reference number should have been displayed on the confirmation webpage when you submitted the payment, and then you should also have received an email with it as well.

However, since you got an error message instead of the reference number, I assume you will not receive the reference number in an email either.

Can you log back into your account on the surcharge website and see if it’s there?

If not, it may tell you what to do if you can’t see it.

That did the trick! We went back to our application and clicked through to the IHS payment and our reference number then appeared.

Have now finished the application and submitted! So just need to upload docs and then wait for appointments/the app!

Thanks so much for everyone’s help - so glad to be making progress.

Hi all

We've finally received our bank statements from Barclays - we're going to scan these tomorrow, do a final check of all docs, and then upload our supporting evidence.

We also received the invitation to register for the app today.  What is the consensus on this currently - are we better off rejecting it and opting for an in person appointment?  We would love to travel to the US for Christmas so are happy to pay for an appointment, if this is likely to be quicker.  Although we are wondering if the prospect of a second lockdown potentially makes this the more risky option.

A few other detailed questions we'd be really grateful for help with:

Is there are benefit to uploading the evidence through the app?  Our sense is that it would be more fiddly to do this on a smartphone rather than via the Sopra Steria website?

We asked for Barclays to send us all bank statements from 1 January, just to be safe.  This came as a single pack, with a cover letter and each of the pages numbered continuously.  However:

- Some of these are mixed up - e.g. some of the Jan-March statements are at the end of the pack, rather than the correct place.  Should we rearrange so that these are chronological?  Doing this will mess up page numbers which might look odd to the person reviewing it?  Or, should we divide into separate docs for different months - Feb, March, April etc?   Again, the page numbers will be messed up if we do this...  Alternatively, should we just scan the whole thing (60 odd pages, covering Jan-September 2020) and upload as a single PDF?

I've included our timeline below for ref.

Thanks again for any help!

Sorry, one other question: I'm seeing on Sopra Steria that there are appointments available in Croydon in early October.  I thought the situation was that they contacted people in order of application - i.e. inviting people to book an appointment, rather than it being a free for all?  Can we simply go ahead and book this?
