OK, now what?
« on: March 19, 2021, 01:10:44 PM »
Finish the taxes finally...been putting it off. Got out the ol' Mastercard to pay with it (using my old US phone number/address like I've been doing for 5 years...which is wrong), won't take the credit card. So now I can't even pay for TurboTax. I guess I'll have to call Mastercard, but then they will know I don't have a US address.... How do you pay for the blasted TurboTax?

Sorry to hear this, wish I knew the answer.  I bought the downloaded version of TurboTax and paid for it using my Amex card with US phone number and US address (our daughter).

Dual USC/UKC living in the UK since May 2016

Ridiculous that a product designed for non residents to file taxes will not allow them to pay using a credit / debit card registered to their foreign address. Almost Pythonesque in its stupidity. But that's the world of non residents and US taxes.

Not sure of this will work for you  - but how about a Transferwise USD debit card?

Would I need a US address or phone number? I don't have one. I COULD ask my brother to use his, but that would be a quick/temp fix....he's older and not in good health. I would still need to get hold of Mastercard I think....see if they have a solution. If not.....no friggin idea what I'm going to do. Try to get hold a paper version I guess.

At this point...just kind of giving up. Anybody know if I can just download the IRS forms from online and fill them out manually?

That's exactly what I did. They are PDF fillable forms so you can type on the computer print and save.

you can always do that - all the forms are on the IRS website.

I have the same challenge as you - but the volume of forms I have means that this year I'm resorting to software - one for the frequent posters has recommended TaxAct - I've managed to create an account with them (not paid for it yet though - that maybe the challenge that I will only find out when I come to file).
When they asked for a phone number  to register I used my UK numbers and dropped the leading 0 - it created a phone number (fake because 791 is not a US area code!) and I was careful not to tick the option of receiving a text message to verify. What I did get was two email with verification codes that when I entered them they were accepted and the account created.

Their payment options include all cards (including Amex) and they have an option for selecting a foreign country for the registered billing address - no where do they ask for a telephone number.

I might be just lucky but I think i may have beaten their system!

I'll let you know how I get on - software looks very good also - with all available forms - 8938, 5471 f1116 even f8838 for a Treaty Based position

Please do let me know. I can wait a few days before I need to start cranking them out like I used to a million years ago....

Regarding TaxAct, I used them for many years whilst US resident but they did not allow me to pay with a US Bank debit card because of the foreign address. Hence me printing and mailing

I hope you better result than me. Good luck.

Just remembered one option offered to pay was to have it taken from any refund due, fee of $54.95 extra.

OK - there's a workaround with TAXACT - if you search the following thread:

Topic: Help with Filing TurboTax Please

scroll down to the response from Alan immediately followed by Barcrest - there's a payment workaround using TAXACT's mailing address except for the first line.

I've just tried it with my Amex card and the fees were accepted

At this point, I've given up. I can go ahead and complain about the silliness of not being able to use TurboTax (over the last 40+ years....this is a continuing issue, not just with TT)....but what's the point? This should be my last hard-ish tax forms to fill out. Next year should be easier.....I'm just going to get used to filling them out manually and hope that at some point the US tax system catches up with the modern world.

At SOME point, I want to close out my US bank account and just not have to deal with the US....but once a year with the tax forms I'm going to be stuck with.

Even if you did manage to get TurboTax to take your money, there's quite a few snags this year around Foreign Tax Credits causing efiles to get auto-rejected - I'm going to wind up printing and mailing anyway, looks like (I was able to pay them with an old US credit card that has my parents address, works for now).

Definitely thinking about doing it all by hand next year, I wind up double checking most of it by hand anyway. The AMT + FTC bits get confusing, that's the one part I worry about doing it by hand and making a mistake.

I’m sure that Turbo Tax has a work around as Tax Act does. My 2 cents would be to contact support and explain the situation. They will either give you a whitelisted Stateside address, or let you file for free. Agreed it’s very frustrating not being able to file without a U.S. address. Many banks offer a ‘mailing address’ and ‘street address’. Try a family member, friend or even last U.S address. D/C’s can still be mailed to the U.K., and won’t affect billing address on file.
