Submitting a paper return to the IRS
« on: April 02, 2021, 08:38:08 PM »
Just in case this is of any use to anyone here, I mailed my 2020 tax year 1040 paperwork to the appropriate US office here (Kansas City, MO is the processing center for my state). I sent it certified on 11 February. It was finally delivered to the IRS on 23 February. As of today, 2 April, the IRS is acknowledging receipt under the "Where's My Refund" link on the IRS website. So, from the time it was delivered to the IRS until the time they logged it as arrived and in-process online was around five weeks.  That's not bad at all, considering.

We had to re-send the daughter's 2019 1040 as it had been over a year since they should have processed it (it was in the same envelope as mine for that year, and mine was processed last June). Even the IRS agent on the phone admitted it probably had been lost. She recently sent the new copy of her 2019 1040 via Priority Mail to Austin, Texas (since she was living overseas in 2019).  Priority Mail is billed as taking 2 to 3 days. It took about 10 days to get there, according to USPS tracking.

So in case you have to send your tax forms in hardcopy, be aware that there is still apparently still a delay in the USPS delivery systems. One of the couriers might be a better option. DEFINITELY send it tracked, whatever you do.

A question since I have put off finishing mine...... Do you send any "proof" paperwork (bank accounts, 1099R etc) in with your tax-work papers? It's been a long time since I did my taxes on paper. Seems like I use to include W2 etc etc.

Last year I sent mine in FedEx I think. Cost £30-40 I think, but it got there fast.

I think the rules are the same for everyone. Only send in documents like W2, 1099s if tax has been withheld on them.

Well that will make it easier. I don't think the 1099r had any tax taken out. Now I just need to get inspired enough to make a couple of "official" copies and send it off.

Just follow the instructions in the booklet and on the 1099 forms, etc.  If it says keep a copy and send one with the return, do that. The IRS has all that information electronically anyhow (I think) from the entity that sent the 1099, but if it's required and not with your packet it might slow things down a bit.  Pretty much you only put in the forms required and any W-2 or 1099 forms (as advised by the directions). If they want something else they'll contact you.

Rather surprisingly this year, the 1040 form had a place to put phone number and email on it. That has never been the case before, and the IRS always advertised that they would never phone, but only communicate by formal mail.
