Life in the UK Test - Booking time
« on: August 09, 2021, 09:05:44 PM »
Hello!

I’ve just gotten FLR(M) and am keen to get to work on my Life in the UK Test.

I’ve got the books, app, and am really only just starting to practice.

My question is what has availability been like lately? Approx how long would I need to wait from booking to taking the test? I’m in London if that matters re: test centres.

Assessing whether I need to book and work toward that date (if there’s a big gap), or just practice ‘til I’m ready and then book (if booking isn’t too far out).

Any advice much appreciated!

Answered my own question… loads and loads of tests available! I was too afraid to set up an account in case I had to follow through with booking.  ::) Nevertheless, I am now booked for several weeks out and it gives this procrastinator a deadline to work toward!  ;D

I did mine a few years ago, now, but that's what I needed, too.  Book it to give me a hard deadline, and then I had no choice but to prepare.  Good luck!

Unsolicited tip: I had the app and was "studying" solely by setting up mock test situations, and reading thoroughly all the ones I would get wrong.  Before long, I was consistently getting 24 right on every go.  But a few days  before my test date, I decided to do an online practice test for the sake of completeness... and I failed.  Needless to say this put me in a state of panic and bewilderment.  How could the official app have let me down? I wanted to just chalk it up to an outdated website, but I couldn't.  Passing was too important, so I took time to read (the section of) the book I missed the most in: the early history stuff... in my opinion, the app doesn't cover this area adequately.  After just a cursery skimming through this section of the book, along with my work with the app, I easily passed the test on the day.  All of that to say: don't rely solely on the app, like I nearly did.  There were a couple of questions on the early history stuff on my actual test, and at least one that I wouldn't have known without the skim-reading of that part of the book.

But do use the app!  It's really good, other than that oversight.

Thanks, @jfkimberly thats good to know! I’ve only used the app so far and was thinking I was a genius with all my high scores  ;D but then I noticed that it did seem oddly light on certain topics. I’ve got the books so I’ll definitely crack those open to fill in the gaps!

So I won’t tell you that it is SUPER easy to reschedule……. I changed my date like a million times.  Until I was 10 days from giving birth and KNEW I wouldn’t be able to study with a newborn.  ::)

Read the book, then do the online practice tests, of which there are many, until you are consistently passing. Re-read any sections which are giving you trouble.  :)

I have a real problem remembering dates, so I found it helpful to treat the whole set of dates as times on a 24 hour clock and relate stuff to my day.  The Magna carts was at lunch (1215)

The only problem is that now I have passed the test I have flushed all that stuff out of my brain.  I know that Henry III was around coffee time at 3 pm (1500) and a bunch of important stuff (maybe the Orange revolution ) happened right around time to quit work (1650 or maybe 1750)

The other day I was coming back in the country from France and I was totally bragging to the Border Officer "Ask me about the life in the UK, I know it all!"  She was not impressed.

Winner Winner , chicken dinner.    My son taught me that rhyme.  Doesn't help much with thier names though.

By the way @ms1967 , if you end up booking in Hounslow, schedule the test right around lunch.  There's tons of great Indian food around and you can celebrate with some Bhirayani  after you passed.
