Retired Person of Independent Means Visa
« on: November 17, 2021, 09:10:05 PM »
A friend seems to have been advised by an immigration lawyer that this visa is still available, but everything I can find says it was ended an extremely long time ago (like 2008ish). Did they bring it back? Just want to make sure I'm giving accurate information. Thanks :)

No, it hasn’t been brought back.

The Retired Person of Independent Means visa was abolished in 2008 and hasn’t existed since.

There is still a page for extending the visa on the UKVI website, but it’s closed to new applicants

Maybe they are thinking an investor visa option?

Nope, I shared that with them and they were clear they don't have the resources. Possibly they made up that it was an immigration advisor telling them about it, but they are going to be disappointed. :( I told them I didn't think there was a path for a parent to move here outside of the employment/investment visas a few weeks ago, and suggested applying for visitor visas to ensure they got the full 6 months together but due to timing that wasnt an option. The parent had planned on applying for a visa once they got here, which as we all know absolutely wouldn't have worked. And if they'd told the border they were moving definitely would have been sent straight home!

It’s hard for people to understand that they can’t just move.

I remember my mom saying something about retiring here and I said she wouldn’t be able to.  She genuinely didn’t believe me for quite some time.  ::)

I agree. Its horrible to keep aging parents away from their children, and the wealthy retirees who only add benefits to society here. :(

The UK has never had chain migration. Adults migrate to the UK knowing that if they want to be with elderly parents, they will need to move back to their country of origin.

There is an elderly dependant visa but that has a very strcit criteria to meet. It has a very high refusal rate and a refusal means they will unlikely be allowed to visit the UK again as they have given their intention to remain in the UK.

Some of the EU countries will allow non-EU retirees and this article has a list

As EU countries have insurance based healthcare systems,  the cost of that will need to be factored into their living costs

It isn't chain migration if the person moving is of independent means. But nice try.

I did quote your " keep aging parents away from their children" in my reply.

For a UK visa for those of independant means, it is having at least 2 million.

Just one of the many immigration changes by that 1997-2010 government.  Some quite big changes too.

The automatic deportation for those who receive a 12 months jail sentence or more (even if the jail sentence is suspended) was a tough one as it now brought in those with driving offences.
EU citizens working in the UK suddenly losing their ILR status (unless they had already applied and received that ILR). Which also meant they could have one child born in the UK before that date who was born a British citizen, while another child born later in the UK, was not.
Bringing in that those born a British citizen could now have their citizenship removed if they held another citizenship, whereas before it was only those who naturalised as a British citizen who could lose their British citizenship
Life in the UK test.
