Amnesty programme - No response?
« on: December 29, 2021, 01:38:03 PM »
Hi, all -
I had an expat firm complete my back tax returns within the IRS amnesty programme back in August. I had to print these and return the hard copies, whilst they e-filed my FBARs.

The hard copies were received (according to the US Postal Service tracking number) and the FBARs were electronically recorded in mid-August (according to their confirmation). The tax firm advised it could be up to 12 weeks and that "no news is good news", but I'm concerned that I've still not had any response, even 18 weeks later -- and the expected return of approximately $1500 would be really helpful! I've checked on the "where's my return" website, but they show no record of my returns. Maybe that's because it's the amnesty programme??

Has anyone else been in this boat? I can't get anyone on the IRS phone line. (It goes in circles and eventually hangs up after hours on hold.)
Would the Tax Advisory Service, as someone helpfully posted earlier, be of any help? Does anyone have any other IRS numbers I could try? Any help gratefully received!

IRS policy is not to reply.  Since you have engaged an accountant to advise you, probably worth speaking with your accountant to obtain her/his advice as she/he will know your specific circumstances.
