My husband will complain to people about the state of our house but neglect to mention that it's because we are doing work on the house ourselves and that irrationally irritates me sometimes because he makes it sound like we just don't care and are just sitting around in the filth for fun.
Yeah, I just found it pretty not kosher to tell people I've never met that our house is a dump. It's not *that* bad!

In our case, our house IS a dump.  But my husband would never tell that to people.  We just can't have anybody over 'til we fix it and clean it up.  It's going to be a very long time.  :P

Should have seen my place when we bought it.  And we had a big American meetup party less than three weeks after we moved in.  The message was "trash the place, it's all going anyway."   :P

My house is very tidy. My husband works hard to keep it that way.  If it were up to me, it would probably not be quite a midden, but it sure wouldn't be hoovered everyday and cleaned top to bottom several times a week like it is now. ;) :P

Yeah I totally agree! I always chime in when my husband makes comments with a "it's honestly not that bad.."

If I didn't have my husband, I would have to find room in the budget for a cleaning service.  It's so happening.  I'd probably also have to bring in an organization specialist to kickstart me, too.  And maybe bring them back once a year or so.

I do think messy house conversations need the caveat, "We're still trying to organise all the stuff we've merged together" (margo) and "We're doing DIY!, so it's all a bit wild" (x0Kiss0fDeath)

Even as clean as our house is, we do the mad dash before the in-laws come over. And I still usually try and make a caveat "We've been out in the garden all day" (or whatever)....  My in-laws house is always 'show home' ready.

We haven't even started the DIY.  We're just living in the demolition phase.

And, yeah... my in-laws live in a nice (80's-era dated) house that's always tidy.  I don't know if they live that way, or if they just clean it up when we're expected.  There's never dust on things!  Surely people don't dust the top shelves every day?

YASSSSS!!!  My inlaws are always prepared for a "pop in."  HOW?!?!?

If I try to tidy why my kids are awake.... well...  I'm going to lose that battle.  (Don't worry, they ARE required to tidy up after themselves before bed.  But there really is no point before then.)

For reals!  My poor husband, though... he comes home from work and I've not been productive, and he just looks around and sighs wearily.  He doesn't clean, mind you.  He just looks disappointed with me.  :P  And that's justified.  And he does acknowledge it when I do tidy up.

Meanwhile, I try to make up for my laziness it with tasty noms, a clean-ish "kitchen" space, and ingredients at the ready for random culinary collaborations (while also not contributing to the food waste problem... it's a very narrow line to walk!).  My proudest moments are when he says, "We don't have any (unlikely ingredient), do we?"  Most recently, it was mirin.  We rarely cook Asian flavours, but I was able to happily say, "Yes, we do.  And sesame oil."  Then we made Sichuan chicken and egg fried rice for dinner.

I dust off my ipad and phone EVERY DAY.   ;D

I just use my dirty laptop and phone.  They rarely get dusted/cleaned.  I'm disgusting.

We were tidying the guest room for our guest last night.  My husband said, "Are you just moving the piles from this room to somewhere else?"  YUP!!!!

The guest room is the staging area for kid's clothing that has become too small.  It's an ALWAYS growing pile!
