She can't kill Harry!

I really think it's a red herring. The idea of having the hero of the book die in the end would kill sales. After the initial burst the sales would disappear. Would you buy those books for your kid, knowing that he dies in the end?

She's got so many millions, poor sales certainly wouldn't hurt her, though.  I guess it all depends on her editors and publishers, though.  I mean, she is contracted for seven.  It's not the first time she's said she wanted Harry to end w/her, and I can sort of see her point about not wanting other 'authors' to go and ruin it all w/a bunch of sad spin-offs, I mean, look what happened when someone tried to write a sequel to 'Gone With The Wind'.  Man, that was pitiful!

I'd still buy them for my kids if he died, though, sure.  B/c these books are so heavy - I mean, from about book 4 on, they're more like pre-teen/teen books.

But one of the many ways in which I am a weirdo is that I see death as an integral part of life, so its being a topic doesn't seem like something I'd steer my kids from.

FWIW, I went to another talk given by author Ian Rankin, who is contracted for 11 Rebus books - the next is the last - and he mentioned that his publisher would NOT let him kill off Rebus.  So he thinks he might retire him to Costa del Dosh/Sol where he can still smoke in peace and maybe solve another murder.

I don't think that if she does kill off Harry that it will hurt her sales.  The series is so popular that everyone is going to want to finish it to the end, no matter the outcome, IMO.

I'm not talking about immediate sales, I'm talking about later printings and people who read them when they came out buying them for their kids when they're older. Imagine how you would feel if you read that as a child!

I have read up to book 5 for my 7 year old.  The last one got far too complicated for him so we stopped. He just inadvertently read that Dumbledore died and was okay with that. I was talking to him about this latest gossip and the possibility of Harry dying. He just thought it silly but wasn't upset by it.

COuld the two characters to die be Draco and Harry?

I've finally read the HP books. I found the Prisoner of Azkaban at work (Bookcrossing book) and decided to read it before I sent it back out and was hooked. I haven't read the first two but I've read the others. Finished Half Blood Prince yesterday and I'm soooo gutted I'll have to wait another year for the next one.

Start again with the first and then you will have to read all the others again in order because you will now have new clues. :)

It might be Ron and Harry.  One of the Weasleys is probably going to cop it.

I hadn't even thought about the Weasley's.  I guess I was just hoping that Ron and Hermione would go off into the sunset or something.

I think I'll do that. Jon keeps making fun of me, though. He keeps calling me a kid since I'm reading a kids book.

I think Draco will be dead before we get halfway into the book.  He completely failed in his job for Voldemort, not to mention his family isn't in Voldemort's good graces any longer.  He serves no purpose.  The only thing that could possibly save him is if Snape takes him in, which is possible but doubtful.

As for the Weasleys.... I agree that at least one of them will most likely die.  I've theorized that Ron will sacrifice his life to save somone (most likely Harry or Hermione), but I could equally see it being Ginny.  Either option would sink me into depression.  The only Weasley she could kill off and not bother me is Percy.  I say throw that little weasel to the wolves. >:(

It doesn't bode well for the Weasleys.  There are too many spares in that family.  ;D

She might save Hagrid, though.

Of course, Pettigrew will have to play some part, b/c Harry saved his life and Dumbledore pointed out that this creates a magical bond between wizards, whether they like it or not.

My guess is she bumps off Harry.  She's said many times she always meant for him to die w/her, and I can see her point about not wanting someone to write some crap sequel a la Gone w/the Wind.

What if it's Harry and Voldemort?  Two main characters, and would go along with the prophecy...

Although, she did say 'two main characters she didn't expect to die' so probably not Voldemort...you'd expect him!
