Just a thought on the OP. I couldn't find any mention of their age. And the spousal visa requires you to be at least 21... Just another thought.

Ha well more research, the ACLU won all three cases, but they still only apply to the counties that there were held in.  Oy Vey.

It is just people ordained by the internet, the law states anyone who does not have a congregation, so my parents were married by a recently graduated seminary student and there marriage is not valid.  My friend from high school got married by her retired grandfather, also not valid.

In Rhode Island (and possibly other, or even all, states) you can get a decree by the state legislature allowing you to perform a marriage. I'm fairly sure it's free. My friend had her father get one so he could perform her marriage. What it says is that you're given permission to marry only those two people, only on a specific date and only at a specific locale. So it's not as though you can go around marrying people willy-nilly! Oh, and my friend's father got a cool official-looking document to remember the day.

If people are looking for an alternative to internet-ordained minister, it's something to check out. Call your Secretary of State and see if it's an option in your state.

It isn't in PA that is part of the problem.  They don't license anyone to perform marriages,
so it is up to interpretation.

I believe you can get a self-uniting license in Pennsylvania. That's often used in Quaker weddings where there's no officiant, but it's open for anyone to do.

Now some counties claim that only Ba'Hai and Quaker followers can get a self-unifying certificate.  They are supposed to be for everyone.

The legislature just needs to sit down and either issue a certificate for people to perform ceremonies or clarify the law.

Lancaster county told me we'd have to prove we were Quaker.  Which I have no idea how anyone would d o that, but whatever.

PA is just so ridiculous when it comes to getting married.  But of course, that's not something you'd know until you start the process!

That would have been very cool to have my dad marry us. If I had known about it sooner, I would have looked into it. As it is, we're less than two weeks out now. Holy cow! LOL :)
