Historyenne- I think the link is wrong. It comes up as the church from the OP. Otherwise, that is a rockin' flat! ;D

Whoops  :-[

Thanks, GGTL, the link should be fixed now.

What a fun thread! :D

This is where I grew up:

It didn't come up.

I like them, too! But I don't think I'll be that lucky to live in that area. I'll be lucky if I can get by without a roommate when I move over. I'm too old (and set in my ways!) to have to live with someone I'm not dating!

Well, if you could get into council housing, a lot of them are council flats, although some of the flats have been sold off over the years.  It's interesting to see the contrast between the million pound flats right next to the same of the same potential value, but being let out by the council.  Then there are even a few near some of the squares which are entire single family occupancy houses still, and these are massive buildings.  You are talking close to the triple digits in millions of value.  But they live next door to council tenants.  Not critical of this in the least.  I think it's one of the most amazing things about Pimlico and Belgravia.

By the way, I love the smaller Georgian brownstones that are pretty much all over the rest of west London.  I even don't mind some of the big ornate stucco beasts designed by other architects.  I just don't like the linearity of Cubitt's houses.  It always feels very oppressive to me.

When I have more time I will set up a Google streetview tour of what might be one of the most architecturally overlooked areas in the US.  It always amazed me, impressed me, and broke my heart (when they were neglected) to see the sheer number and diversity of the buildings there.  I think that no other city can boast the greatest number of abandoned homes and buildings along with having around 6 FLW homes (plus commercial/civic buildings), an impressive number of art deco for the north, having a park system designed by the guy who designed Central Park, and so on.  I didn't even notice it all when I first moved there because all you could see was decay.

ETA:  Here's a preview.  I used to live in this place.  The streetview doesn't really do it justice.  When you stepped into the lobby, it was like stepping into the inter-war period.  It had huge chandeliers and it smelled ancient (even though it is relatively new on an architectural scale). This isn't because it was in bad repair.  They just had period furniture and stuff, and still used old methods of finishing the floors.  I've said I wish I could transport that building over here and live in our old flat.  If I am homesick for anything other than people, it's that flat.  I don't even want to get into how much cheaper the rent was (and it included utilities) or the fact it had closets.  Lots of them. :(

But, I don't think you can really get a feel for a place without actually seeing it in person.

Oh I love it! Thanks for the thread

It is much different here in size but I do love to watch the streetview zoom around the world in 2.2 seconds! Its great to see other places where you really know where people are and it helps when you need to drive somewhere!

My parents "compound" as we call it - it is about 70 acres since they own the house next door too ;-)

My house in Texas - no backyard neighbors oh those were the days

Current house until the end of the year or so and then we will search for a bigger house but it is a lovely terraced small house.

Oops! Sorry 'bout that. I can understand not wanting to get confused with the Grinch since (according to your profile photo there) you do look so much alike.  :P

I'd bet beer prices in an airport in Shetland would be a rip off- its in the middle of nowhere!
