Apparently called turnips in Scotland and the US, but they're called swedes in England.

Yes, but they're called Turnips in Scotland as well - aka 'Neeps'

But they're the big yellowish purple coloured rutabeg/swedes most people think of. I actually have white and red topped ones growing in the garden

Then there are the much smaller-sweeter turnips- I currently have purple topped, yellow, pure white ones growing.

So, its all fun  ;D

Everyone I know in England calls turnips "turnips".  Swedes are called rutabegas in the US.  (Again, TMK)

Yeah, swedes are neeps, and swede and turnip seem to be used fairly interchangeably up here, but there is the other type of turnip as well which is wee and white. Those are always called turnips and nothing else.

Good to know! That would explain why the picture of the swede I was sent didn't look exactly like I would expect a turnip to look. I've never eaten either, so I was just going on what the Scottish designer said, but as always it just ends in confusion.  :)
