Yeah the credit thing is something else I need to do. Any suggestions I couldn't even get a phone contract  ::)  Natwest suggested that I wait three months have my wages going in and apply for a card through them because they can at least prove my address and employment?

But any other suggestions would be fantastic!

You don't need a phone contract to have a phone.  I used to have a contract and actually paid a lot more per month than pay as you go, so I exclusively use pay as you go now.  Originally I was using a UK SIM card in my unlocked US phone, but that phone died and I bought a new UK phone to use with the same SIM.  It was £109 for a samsung smartphone.  You definitely don't need a credit check for that!

You'll build up credit over time once you have the bank account and job.

Well went to bank with the NIN letter and no luck on an account.  Lady at Lloyds said that letter can only be used along with another UK photo ID (BRP apparently doesn't count as UK photo ID) and not on its own...which the guy on the phone never mentioned, he just said "NIN letter is even on our list" and made us an appointment.  On the plus side the lady at the bank said she would submit our case for like this process that they don't do much for extenuating circumstances...bc we live with my husbands dad and have no council tax or utilities under our name....my husband is positive and trusts that Joanne will come through for us...when we left she was like "I will finish this process and will call you in 48 hours on what headquarters decides"... I said to my husband she prob saw all the hoops she would have to go through and just stopped the process after we left... :P I expect to hear that she had no luck by Monday :)

Sent off for provisional license today.

Definitely get Three for cell phone service if coverage is decent in your area (no problem in the SE).  Get one that has Feel At Home with it.  It's awesome.  You only need a bank account to get a contract with Three

Capital One do a credit builder credit card, but you may need to be here a bit longer.

I was able to transfer my USA AmEx to a GBP AmEx but I've heard they've stopped doing that, but definitely worth investigating!

The cost for your first provisional licence is £34 according to the website.  If you apply online, they will send you a letter asking for your passport or BRP (possible ID letter for bank?).  You also get an automatic refund if you can't send in your ID document which is nice.  I had applied last year but was travelling soon so decided to delay getting the provisional for a few months.

I did the same thing. I had a trip planned to the US and couldn't send it in on time. I got a check by post as a refund for my online payment.

Also, it's cheaper to do it online, sounds like £10 cheaper.

The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Massive thank you for the 3 suggestion! Opened that today :) had a pay as you go until I got a contract but even was refused for just a sim only contract at 02. So frustrating! But on the road to credit building now!!!
